Two stories unfortunately are not unique.  and why  pre-existing conditions are a death warrant for anyone.

My son, Paul, will die without a heart transplant.    But the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania refused to put him on the transplant list -- because he's autistic.

Paul is only 23, and he's amazing.    He was diagnosed with a deadly heart condition four years ago, but he battles through it with a smile.    He's smart and creative -- we just self-published a story he wrote, and he's working on a sequel.    He loves his nephews. And the whole family loves him.    I don't know how to tell my son that his doctors refuse to give him the operation that could save his life.

I promised Paul that I would fight for him with every breath, no matter what it takes. But I'm afraid my voice alone isn't enough.    I started a petition on Change.org asking the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to put my son on the transplant list -- will you sign?

Paul's doctor says one of the reasons he doesn't qualify for a transplant is that he can't name all the medications he's on. This is ridiculous, because Paul takes 19 medications. My son has faced discrimination because of his autism all his life, but this time, that discrimination could kill him.

I was devastated when I found out the hospital wouldn't help Paul -- it was the worst moment any mother could imagine. But then I read about another mom who got her mentally disabled daughter on the list for a life-saving kidney transplant after more than 50,000 people signed her petition on Change.org. That's what inspired me to start my petition for Paul. I know that if enough people sign my petition, the hospital will give my son a chance to survive.   Thank you,   Karen Corby

I have a sister in Ohio who worked for Bridgestone..Firestone for 43 years as an executive secretary in the legal department before retiring a year or so ago.     She just received a letter stating they were discontinuing her Health Insurance coverage that she had as a retiree.     That's what corporations do.     That's why we need Obama Care.    What about the other salaried employees who can't find a job and cannot afford the COBRA.    And what if Obama had not saved the auto industry at all.     . If Romney gets in and those elderly crazies who voted for Romney, lose their health insurance or pay more for less I will be dancing on their graves.     Sorry but that really drives me crazy that they don't see this.
OK the podium is yours now.   ---  Norma

I am very sorry your family is going through such a difficult time. My family also has had to deal with serious health issues and I know how frustrating it can be tryinf to get vital treatment for someone you love and having a medical professional slam the door in your face. My isssue was neurosurgery for my husband, also at the University of Penn. I ended up taking him to Lankenau where he receeived wonderful and thoughtful care.I worked at Penn for nearly 11 years. If I were you in addition to doing your petition, I would submit a formal letter of complaint concerning the failure of the doctor to put your son on the transplant list and be sure to emphasis that this is  a discriminating action against your son. The letter should be be Guest Services. Their address is Hospital of the University of Pennsylvannia, 3400 Spruce Street, 1 Silverstein, Phila. PA 19104. The physicians and medical practices can ignore complaints sent directly to them but they must respond and report back to Guest Services how they resolved the issues that caused the complaint. The hospital and the medical practices take and negative feedback from patients and patients' families very serious. It is possible that this might help to get your son one the transplant list.
I wish you and your family all the best.

Jane.
