Not that simple. There must be changes made because the problem of paying for it is real. There is a lot of confusion because Medicaid is tied in with Medicare and should really be a separate welfare program paid by general taxation so we could see and maybe control the cost.

Almost no Americans can now remember what it was like to be 65 or older before Medicare began in 1966.      “In those days,” , “insurance companies wouldn’t insure seniors because they were considered bad risks, so millions had no health coverage and often faced financial ruin if they became very sick.” In other words, the same predicament as millions of people under 65 face now.

Today, older Americans on Medicare would love for their children and grandchildren to have the same sense of security that they have now.

The complexity of reforming the system only adds to uncertainties.     But let's be clear about PRIORITIES in the USA. and what they are and have been.        If we didn't have the two wars costing trillions $$  ...we could easily have paid for a ONE PAYER healthcare system for everyone.    Just like every other modern industrialized country in the world where their citizens have no stress or worries about obtaining  DENTAL or MEDICAL.    That's the shame this country carries around that a rich country like our's having millions of people suffering unnecessary hardships.    This country can afford ANYTHING it choses to afford....let's not forget it.

I do remember and things were different alright. Health care was a lot less costly and many advances have been made in what is and can be done. The Increase in Prices has exceeded the gains in treatments ,but employer paying much of the cost let the increases continue with little notice until the economy tanked and jobs were lost.
What and how we should pay for is the real problem in deciding priorities. National defence is surely a priority even if we have made mistakes in wars engaged in according to hind-sight. Health is a priority ,but single -payer may not be the best or only way. If we had a good simple income tax that almost everybody paid into we could raise a lot more funds. I understand the mtg.int. deduction alone costs a trillion dollars! Imagine what all the other add-ons cost!

It is simple and it is what we and the AARP should be doing: No cuts to SS, Medicare. How is it simple: A. rescind the Bush Tax cuts. B. Close Tax loop holes. C. Fix the pharmaceutical problem so that drugs here don't cost $1000 more then they do in Europe.

Seniors, we need to wake up because we are the weak kicking dog who the burden, the sacrifice, is going to fall on. Every Republican job plan just announced is to lower taxes. How are we going to fix the (Wars and Real Estate debacle caused) debt then? With the few dollars of the seniors. Obama is talking about paying for a huge infrastructure building project using private companies who will get rich on it. How are they going to pay for it? With the few dollars of the seniors. We are on the whipping post because they don't think we or the AARP have the strength to stand up and say "No. Don't blame our programs."

The first Bush tax cut for the rich happened in June 2001, 3 months before 9/11. You would think Bush would have said things have changed we are a country at war and, rescind the tax cuts TO PAY FOR IT. But he didn't. And we went to war in Afganistan and stayed even after we defeated Al Kaida. Then we went to WAR 2 in Iraq, And what did Bush do? In 2003 as WAR 2 got underway ANOTHER Bush tax cut happened for the rich. Once again, the Republicans weren't calling for offsets when these 2 Wars of theirs were breaking the bank. And they were giving huge tax cuts to the rich. So it is not our programs fault Seniors. Yet we are being blamed and hung out to dry.

We must consolidate our power using AARP as a tool and make a stand, before it is too late and we are left with nothing. Who's got ideas on how we can harness the power of the AARP to do this?

Not that partisan. Closing income tax loop-holes,deductions and all the other add-ons would raise a lot more money and save a lot of non-productive money a nd time wasted trying to comply and "game" the present tax code! The mtg;int. deduction alone costs one trillion dollars i've read. Income tax RATES are not the problem when almost half of filers paid NO income tax!
The wars may have been a mistake. but both parties have been and are involved.

Nobody is targeting anybody over the age of 50. AARP needs to promote correct info and quick trying to scare seniors.
