My wife and I are American citizens, but my wife's parents are living in China.  Recently her father was diagnosed with cancer and very likely will not make it.  Since he had been taking care of his partially disabled wife, this job will fall on us.  We are thinking of bringing her to the U.S. to live in our home, but I am leery of doing so without first making sure she has some form of medical insurance (since we'd have to "sponsor" her immigration, I think we'd be responsible for any medical expenses she might incur - she has no medical issues now, but you never know!  She is 68 years old).

Anyway, I am not having any luck finding coverage.  I checked our family's insurance - Blue Cross & Blue Shield - and they don't take on clients > 65 years old, unless they qualify for Medicare.  Since my mother-in-law would be a "fresh" immigrant (i.e. not here for 5 years), she would not qualify (as I understand it, after 5 years, she would be allowed to be in Medicare for a monthly premium).  I also checked AFLAC and they have the same policy.  I am beginning to believe that there is no insurance company that insures >65 people who do not qualify for Medicare??

I did see some "Immigrant" insurance on the Web, but the policies I saw provide only very limited protection (e.g. "up to $4700 per single surgery" - what surgery costs so little?  A major surgery could run into 6 figures, potentially causing us financial ruin!)

Does anyone know of an insurance company that writes medical policies for >65 people without Medicare?  I realize that it might be pricey, but whatever the premium may be, I think might be preferrable to the alternative possibility.

Thanks for any info.
