The hospital co-pay is $1132 whether you stay one day or 60! For people on SS income alone and basic Medicare this presents a situation where you really can't afford to go to the hospital for anything

Why isn't there a graduated co-pay so that if you go into the hospital for 1 or 2 days, you aren't stuck with that large co-pay?

Some Medicare Supplimental plans pick up the deductible for Part A ( the HI or Hospital Insurance part of Medicare), of course, these might have higher monthly premium but if you can't afford the deductible that should be one of your considerations in picking a supplemental plan or Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you don't have other coverage like a supplemental plan or some coverage under a Medicare Advantage plan, then the deductible is only part of your problem cause Medicare only pay 80% of covered charges.

The Part A or the Hospital Insurance part of Medicare is the part that is in the worse trouble financially.  So look for this deductible to continue to rise.

Many procedures can be done on an out-patient basis - have you checked to see if what you are having to have done is offered in some other way than hospitalization?

It is an annual deductible so if something else has to be done this year in a hospital setting, you will be covered.
