One of the best things I started was walking every morning, my daughter got me started as she is preparing for the Leukemia Run which is 26 miles. I thought well if she can do this I can at least try

I just started walking and, even though I have knee problems, I still feel invigorated afterwards.  I plan on continuing on the same course until I'm no longer getting winded, then walk a bit farther.  For those who can't always walk outside due to weather conditions, there's always joining those "mall walkers!"

Good for you DBernard.  I have the same problem.  I don't want to walk outside in the winter because of the ice.  I have some DVDs to Walk at Home.  You can go as slow or as fast as you want.  I usually come home from the Y and put on a DVD and do some of that for 1/2 hour.

Yup, you later posters have a point. How about considering walking early, as many suggest, when outside temps are in teens (or below), snow or ice on the roads, country and no spaces for walkers to get out of the way of automobiles. No room to walk around inside the apartment or house. Depressing to be urged to walk by those who are so enthusiastic and have no idea it's not a pleasant and easy task for many of us. We don't even have a place to go to walk....no park, no mall.

At least if we have sufficient breath and strength, and if the afternoons warm up, we might hike up and down hills, through woods and brush and vines and briars.  And no doubt we will see birds if we can manage these hikes.

Otherwise, any better walking ideas?

I do the same as DBernard....but I walk in my house...I have a very small home, but I walk from one end of the house to the other, plus go down the stairs to the basement and walk to the other end them back and up the stairs and walk again to the other end...and just keep repeating for usually 1/2 hour....it works and I get in a stairway on each trip..

I love my job and most of the time I spend 10-12 hours a day at work.  I'm not a morning person, so I can't even imagine getting up at 5 a.m. to go for a walk.  What I have started doing is taking 15-20 minutes twice a day to walk.  I now have a walking partner and am planning to engage several others in my effort.  On days when I don't walk, I return home too tired to do anything but shower and sleep.  I just started this program so I'm looking forward to reporting that my energy is increasing and that I am also losing weight!  Please send words of encouragement!!  Thanks.

In Response to Walking : you're encouraging.  I plan to walk daily, but find it hard just getting outside. I have loads of reasons, but it is not helping me feel better, and move better.

My husband was a runner and introduced me to running.  He passed away; instead of brooding over my loss, I went back to running but had to stop because of shin fracture.  I resorted to walking; it kept my mind free!  When the weather does not cooperate with me, I use an inclined treadmill (bought some 20 years go but still works).  I will be 75 years old next month and walk as much as I can.  Thank you.

In Response to Walking:

Due to eating too much cake and a desk job, I gained about 50 pounts over time. I tried jogging to lose weight but kept getting different types of leg injuries. Eventually I settled on walking, either outside or on the treadmil and found it was easier to lose the weight and get a flatter belly from walking, than anything else. I feel good afterwards, and can even watch a movie if I'm on the treadmil.

I found this book very helpful:

I started walking, a little bit  every day, which eventually  turned into several miles a day, and I started eating healthier a diet at the same time (the Zone diet and Lifestyle).  I ended up losing 100 pounds and keeping it off to this day.

I'm a weather wimp. When the weather works for me, I take a mile walk in the morning and one in the evening. But if it is cold, hot or windy, I don't. So I'm moving to a better climate where there will be no excuse!

Good for you! keep it up. Walking does such wonders for both physically and mentally. I enjoy it when I get a chance to do it with my dogs! :)
