There is a way for adults to learn to swim, with an approach that truly understands how to gently overcome fears. In my first class, i went from trembling in shallow water to being in the deep end at the end of the week.  By the second class I could jump into the deep end. Many adults have had similar experiences, overcoming their fear of the water, with Melon Dash's approach.  Check out the website for "Miracle Swimming":

I almost drowned twice. Once while a friend held me down until a adult pulled her off of me and brought me back to the edge of the pool. Again, taken out by a ripcurrent while my Aunt was busy tanning herself. Some how by the grace of God I managed to swim away from the current and landed face first in the sand while waves where washing over me by then my Aunt looked-up and saw how badly I was scraped and bruised from head to toe. I tried to take a class at a local college. but my fears set in and I have not set my foot back in the water. I would love to learn to swim but, I can't afford lessons at this time.  thks for hearing me out...

I am reading these posts and feel that there might be hope for me but I still have my doubts. I have such a fear of water that I could not even let the shower hit my head without cringing. I am better about that now and can actually get into a pool (3 - 4 ft) and just bounce around as long as I have something to hold onto. My story begins when I was in either the 5th or 6th grade and my Mom took me to classes at the YWCA. I was enjoying it and my instructor until one day my usual instructor was not there and a substitute came in to teach the class. We were doing the see-saw where we would go up and down and get our heads under water. Well, I was coming up and then I was going down and staying there! I didn't know what was happening until my instructor told me that you have to go clear under; she was pushing my head under the water. That did it right there. I didn't come back. Then, as an adult, I took the "Scardey Cat" class and I flunked it; my knuckles were white hanging on to anything. When, I had my children, I took them to classes and they are both wonderful, confident swimmers. They have even tried to help me; they are patient and understand how I feel about the water. When we go to Florida, I use those noodles and they help me bounce around and actually get the water up to my eyes! This is a monumental step for me. I think it would be fun and beneficial for me but that fear is still there and it would take someone with patience and understanding and a tolerant temper to try and teach this 61 year old to swim.

In Response to Re: Swimming - why it is never too late learn:
I learned to swim 2 years ago at age 64.  That was one of the biggest achievements of my life.  I had the best teacher in the world, a senior like me.  The key to learning is a good teacher.  I enjoy swimming and it helps my joint pains.  I say all seniors should do something in the water.

It is very reassuring to read your post as I am your age, 64, and used to be very active and danced all my life until I had cancer which was followed by other health problems. Today, I have a difficult time bending, standing from sitting and after many attempts at dancing I decided that learning to swim would be the best exercise overall that I should do. I'm scared of putting my face under water but if I have a good teacher, I think I can do it!
I have pain 24 hrs/day in one arm but I do better when I move. The buoyancy of the water will also help with enhancing circulation in my legs. Now it is the hunt for a swimming class near where I live. I don't think I'm too old to learn but I think that with the condition of my body it is the most sensible and the best exercise I should do. I agree with you that "all seniors should do something in the water".
Thank you again mygalsal146,I needed you to remind me of this!
