I found a great site for the adult person who would like to learn how to swim.   It has a wealth of information in qualming your fears of water, what are benefits of swimming, safety, importance.   It was a huge success to me as I will soon be learning how to swim as an older adult.   The site is:   www.swimmunity.com.

I think leaning to swim is a great idea. I learned when I was in grade school. We had a pool and it was part of our PE. It is a great workout. You will enjoy it. Wink

I learned to swim when I was 6 years old at my neighborhood pool. I loved being in the water from the get-go ... took swimming lessons ... joined the summer swim team at age 8 ... joined a year-round swim club at age 12 ... took a lifesaving class and became a lifeguard at age 16 ... and ended up swimming on my college swim team for all four years. I know that everyone doesn't have access to a pool, but I think it's a great low-impact exercise and a great safety tool, too. ... I actually like swimming and playing in a pool better than playing in the ocean. I don't like the salt water in my eyes or mouth. ... Also, I am sure that watching "Jaws" back when in 1975 had something to do with my apprehension in the ocean. Every time I step on something unknown or brush up against seaweed, it makes me jump! lol

In Response to Swimming - why it is never too late learn:

I was never taught how to swim and would also love to learn.  I am about to enroll my daughter in classes and plan on getting private lessons while she is also learning, can't wait.  What a great way to get exercise and also gain the health benefits from this exercise.  I am about to correct my self taught bad habits.  Nothing like seeing a person glide in the water when swimming is done correctly.

I was a late learner despite lessons in junior high (couldn't pass beginner level but if it had been structured like it is today, I could have). One of my problems was internalizing my mother's fear of water. Finally learned and went on to instructor card right after college. I've taught hundreds of kids and some adults--including making some progress with my mother! I had adults who were convinced by their parents that they would get ear infections from putting their heads in the water. Others were hard-wired to fear the water due to a near-drowning experience early in life. But because I was a middle age adult myself as their instructor, I was l less threatening than the skinny teenage instructors; adult learners, especially women, were more comfortable with me (I looked a lot like them!) In sum: find a facility and instructor where you feel comfortable (including on how you look in a suit), and give it your best. To the instructors I say: be patient, accept the fears and other history, and take students step by step. And have fun!

I learned to swim 2 years ago at age 64.  That was one of the biggest achievements of my life.  I had the best teacher in the world, a senior like me.  The key to learning is a good teacher.  I enjoy swimming and it helps my joint pains.  I say all seniors should do something in the water.

I was a swim instructor for the local YMCA for many years and taught an adult learn to swim class.  The ages ranged from late teens to people in their 70's.  We would always go at their pace and  after we worked on the items in my lesson plans I would give them the chance to work on what they wanted.  It was also reassuring to these people when they took their first venture on their own to have me swim along with them.  I was so rewarded when one of my older students saw me and had to let me know that what they learned in my class had saved their ife when they fell overboard from a boat.  It's so nice to know that you can make a difference.  I also found that 95% of my students fear stemmed from frightening incidents where they had almost drowned from misjudgement of water depth, someone pushing them under or falling over the side of a boat.

I almost drowned in a lake when I was about twelve years old. I stepped off a ledge of cement  into very deep water while following my relatives who were heading out to a raft in the center of the lake. I tried to yell to the life-guard but he was busy talking to some girls. I began to swallow water in place of air. On the edge of panic, I remembered what my Uncle Manuel taught me on frequent visits to lake Hiaheila. He taught me to hold my breath and float in the water. As soon as I closed my mouth and held my breath,I started to float up to the surface. He saved my life.
This event inspired me to write a children's book. "My Feet Can Touch The Bottom Of The Pool." It shows children the importance of water safety.
