A MUST:  Understand your needs and which Medicare program is best for your needs; review the plans each year during open enrollment to make sure you are getting the best plan for your needs.

The cheapest is not always the best for your needs.  There will be many changes to Traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans over the next few years so pick wisely based on your needs and understand what you are getting.

CNN Money 12/22/2011:
Medicare passes on big profits to insurers

These are exerts from the linked article:

" This has been a volatile year for the stock market. But one sector has been consistently earning a windfall for investors: health insurers that provide private Medicare plans to seniors. . . . .

But what's been so profitable for health insurers is also adding to the U.S. government's roughly $15 trillion debt burden. . . .

The bill for Medicare Advantage, where private insurers serve as healthcare administrators for seniors, currently costs taxpayers 10% more than traditional Medicare where the government serves as the middleman, according to the Congressional Budget Office. . . .

Traditional Medicare plans typically force seniors to pay monthly premiums and deductibles for other medical expenses like hospital stays and prescription drug benefits. By contrast, seniors might pay a single monthly premium for a Medicare Advantage plan and have everything covered.

The downside is that these plans restrict which physicians a senior citizen can see and what hospitals they can use. Unlike most health insurance plans, many Medicare Advantage plans do not provide any reimbursement for out-of-network doctors or hospitals.

Such restrictions can be particularly dangerous if a Medicare Advantage patient is required to see a subspecialist when one might not be included on the plan. . . . .

"The biggest problem is that seniors usually are not educated and think they can go to any Medicare doctor, but they can't," said (Dr.) Verret.

Still, the lure of a single premium and a seemingly simple plan has been drawing new enrollees to Medicare Advantage. Roughly 25% of seniors were covered by these private programs in 2011, nearly double the number in 2004.. . .

In an attempt to get costs for Medicare Advantage in line with traditional Medicare, the government plans to force insurers to hit certain benchmarks to push costs down.

But there will be loopholes and rebates for "higher quality plans." What constitutes quality is still being determined and will likely leave a lot of wiggle room for potential winners and losers."

I have had MEDICARE ADVANTAGE  ( or HMO)  since 2003.       I see the SAME doctors....have the same hospitals and other providers that a friend on an PPO  plan with BC  has and she pays MORE........     I don't need a supplemental plan.     Long live the Medicare Advantage.

I don't know if plans vary from state to state.    Obviously,  if democrats had their way 100%  we would have universal healthcare and dental from birth to death  like OTHER developed countries.     But.......people cut their own throats and vote republican and I have NO IDEA why they haven't got a clue except they don't investigate on their own and listen to right wing propagandists.

I am glad you like the private health care industry option to Medicare and that it works well for you - hopefully, yours will survive any cuts to it by Medicare under the PPACA and it will stay in business.

Do remember to review your policy before committing to it  from year to year because under the PPACA, a reduced payment to them from the government (Medicare) could cause them to change your coverage.

TRUE  I don't know WHAT will happen if the republicans get in power......they never wanted MEDICARE from the start.   Reagan said if we passed MEDICARE over 30 years ago our FREEDOMs  would be GONE.   !!!    SOCIALISM !!!  COMMUNISM !!!      His myths still are alive today.

OF COURSE  medicare costs are going up cause ALL costs are going up for everything !!!   (especially have you checked your private insurance bills on property--car etc  cause they need their 30% profit margin even off of sick people )

Medicare would be turned into a voucher program as republicans want.       This would be great for insurance companies -- but it would require seniors to pay more.       And with so many living on a fixed income, this could leave them with nowhere to turn.   A program like that wouldn’t be fair to seniors who rely on Medicare for their economic security.    It wouldn’t be Medicare at all.     The reason we had medicare is because INSURANCE COMPANIES didn't want to insure OLD PEOPLE..to start with........they are out to make MONEY.....that's what they exist for.

Medicare is critical to the retirement security of millions. It is a promise we made nearly half a century ago

I'm confused by many of your post -
If you believe so much in government provided (tax payer) health coverage, WHY do you opt for a Medicare Advantage Plan, which is the "private" insurance coverage part of Medicare.
Why do you choose this private option rather than TRADITIONAL Medicare?
Is it cheaper than TRADITIONAL Medicare?
Does it cover more health stuff for you than TRADITIONAL Medicare?
Does your Doc and other health care suppliers take the MA and NOT TRADITIONAL Medicare?
What is your rationale for picking the "private" coverage rather than the TRADITIONAL "government" coverage?

Did you know that $583,000,000 million dollars a year is being taken from medicare advantage to pay for Obamacare. Medicare advantage plans are being phased out by Obamacare and seniors will be funneled into AARP's competing medigap program, this is a disaster for seniors.I am worried that AARP is going for big money payouts from Obamacare and not really keeping seniors best interest at heart. Apparently, from what I've read AARP stands to profit over 1 billion dollars over the next 10 years from Obamacare. (CSA). Christian Seniors Association. As a senior I am worried that the program AARP we have so dearly trusted over the years is starting to abandon the very people that have made it what it is today. Can anyone else shed some light on this ?  Most of this post are actual Quotes from CSA. I have been a member of AARP for quite awhile now and would like to continue, but at this is a rather steep price to pay for it. Posted by tvctruck.
