High or low cholesterol is a matter of definition and those definitions change periodically.  During my life time, 69 years, "normal" cholesterol went from 250 to 100 and now, as I see from some readers, even below 80.   The truth is that cholesterol levels and atherosclerosis heart disease are more related to your genes than anything else.  If you inherited genes that tolerate high triglyceride levels, than the chance of you ever getting significant hardening of the arteries is very low.  My cholesterol has been over 230 as long as I have been having it checked routinely,  40 years, and it never changes.  My HDL fluctuate between 55 and 59 and has not changed either.  When I was in my forties, I was required to go through police rooky training.  This type of training is physically very demanding.  As exercise is to have a positive effect on your HDL/LDL ratio, I specifically had my levels checked before and after this three month course.  Result:  There was no significant change.   There are several possibilities.  Either I was in good shape before so that the additional rigorous physical training had little effect or the effect of exercise  on HDL/LDL ratio is overstated.  Frankly, I believe it is a combination of things along with your genetic pre-disposition.  In my opinion, severe prolonged stress is a much broader contributer to heart disease than diet, unless you are totally stuck on carbs and sugar coupled with a lot of alcohol intake.

I am 68 years young. I was recently told my cholesteral if 84, but should be at 70. Does this fish oil stuff really work? I was also told my calcium level is too high. I want to change my eatng habits once and for all. I would like to loose 70 lb. I need some good encouragement along with good encouoraging news. Ms just getting started, and will never give up.

I seriously question whether total cholesteral of 84 is in any way high!!  Maybe you can check around about that.  Mine is in the low two hundreds - now, that is high.  But I eat very little cholesterol producing foods, so wonder if it might be genetic.  Another measure is your CRP - C-reactive protein.  I get that number too when I get all the other cholesterol blood measures done.  My CRP is very healthy and puts me in the category as not likely for heart disease.  The one number for total cholesterol is probably not enough information.  And, I've wondered if the drug companies make the target # for total cholesteral so low so that we'll all take their medications.  (Well, I guess I'm a little bit of a cynic when it comes to drug companies.)

Oh - another thing.  I do take fish oil daily.  I have no idea really if it makes much of a difference.  But, I don't think it can hurt.

Yes I have had very good luck using fish oil for my high cholesterol and high triglycerides.
I was taking a prescription drug for high triglycerides but then lost my health insurance, and the drug was too expensive.  My Dr. suggested I start taking the equivalent in fish oil, to see if this would help my numbers.

I know it seems like a lot, but I got very used to it, and I took 3 (1000 mg each) of fish oil in the morning, and another 3000 mg before bed, and in 3 months time, my total cholesterol number dropped close to 90 points, (it was 170) and my triglycerides went from 500 to 148, so this does work.  All the other numbers in the cholesterol count dropped (the bad ones) and went up on the good cholesterol.  So I really suggest doing this, it helped my numbers tremendously.  I am overweight, and 58 years of age, and you should still exercise, but this amount is the right amount for me, and within the numbers per my Dr., and it does help.

Thanks.

I was at my Doctor's office and saw a medical infomercial. I get my blood drawn every 3 months. I started taking Artichoke Extract (300 mg, twice a day) I lowered my choleteral 30 points. You can find it at your local health food store. I get mine at the Vitiamin Shoppe.

I have had serious side effects from statins and take Fish Oil two 1200 mg caps everyday. Watch my diet and exercise some and have maintained a good level. I also cook with olive oil and avoid fats.

I take fish oil and have for years, but it never lowered my cholesterol.  I take  1200mg 2 x'x a day of RED YEAST RICE and at least 50mg of COQ10 50 mg 2 x's a day.  It has corrected my high cholesterol.  I still have high tryglicerides, if anyone has any suggestions how to lower that I would appreciate it.  I am thinking I have to correct that with diet.  Like not eat sweets and no alcholic beverages.  I don't ingest alcholic beverages anymore cause they caus charlie horses, bad ones.  I do have an electrolite inbalance and I think the alchol effects that as soon as I drink one drink.

I have always had very high cholesterol, it seems to run in the family.  And Lipitor and its ilk had a devastating affect on my body, so I just flat walked away and refused to take it ever again.. However, I've down to under 200 now by simply eating "mindfully". Haven't had beef or pork for over 25 years, seldom even eat fish or chicken. eat mainly fruits, nuts and vegetables ... along with plenty of peanut butter and a little chees. Have lost 40 pounds and now weigh 124 lbs -- exactly what I weighed in high school (I'm 5'3" so that's a very good weight for me). At age 75, I'm in great shape. Work about 20 hours a week as a bookkeeper to supplement Social Security, and walk every afternoon. As far as I'm concerned, you can't just depend on one thing like taking fish oil to help you lower cholesterol, you have to work at it from all angles.

I'm now eating more fiber foods, drinking more water and trying to lose at least ten pounds.
