In Response to Re: Fighting cholesteral using fishoil:
I got my cholterol down with statins, but after a few years I began to get addled easily.  My doc took me off statins, my confusion went away, and my cholesteol stayed low without meds. I took  fishoil during that whole period of several years, mostly becaused do not like most fish, especially saltwater. I'd like to know if brook trout have the same good fats as sea trout.  Does anyone know?

Yes, fresh water trout are high in DHA (an omega 3 fatty acid). Herring, sardines, and salmon are also good sources.

I was at my Doctor's office watching a medical infomercial. It recommended Artichoke extract to lower cholesteral. Since I get my blood tested every 3 months I gave it a try. I take two 300mg pills a day with my other vitimins and lowered my chlolestral 30 points. My Doctor asked me how I did it, and I told him that I got the information from his waiting room. I get the suplement from my local "Vitamin Shoppe."

In Response to Fighting cholesteral using fishoil:  I have been taking 1000mg of niacin each evening, coupled with lots of chicken, veggies, rice and fruits.  I take a fishoil capsule, as well.  Plus, I walk a mile each day.  I'm 75 years old and my total cholesterol was 255 when last checked and before the niacin.  I'm hoping for better results in three weeks when I'll find out if this has made any difference.  Statins made me very ill.  I had muscle pains (thought it was arthritis), leg cramps almost every night, indigestion and headaches.  But, my total cholestrol was 192 when I was taking this poison.  It took only a few days of not taking that statin that my health began to improve.  Within a month, I was feeling GREAT.  If what I'm doing now doesn't work, then I'll just have to live knowing my cholesterol is high.  I do not have diabetes or heart disease or any other high risk factors.  Has anyone out there taken Niacin with good results?

Anyone having good luck using fish oil?  What ideas are being used by you to fight bad cholesteral in a natural way?

If you wish to avoid fishoil as I do being a vegetarian there is a new supplement called Ovega=3 which is DHA and EPA omega 3 derived from algae that salmon eat.  This will help lower your LDL.  A major problem for me is raising my HDL.  I have ben taking Niaspan for this and it has been raised considerably, (from only 12 to 35).  While this is still a bit low my HDL to LDL ratio is now in the normal range and my cardiologist feels that is even more important than the numbers themselves.  In order to try to raise your HDL numbers with supplements try using a niacin supplement.

Success Story

I lowered my cholesterol by 25% to 28% in one month with Cholest Off by Nature Made.

I took two tablets 15 min. to 30 min. before breakfast & two tablets 15 min. to 30 min.  before dinner.

I also altered my diet significantly.

I ate oatmeal for breakfast each morning. Also I put a tablespoon of ground flax seed & a tablespoon of lecithen on my fruit each morning. I also added a teaspoon or two of cod liver oil to my morning orange juice.

I aimed for two dinners of chicken, two dinners of fish, two meatless dinners, & one beef meal each week.

My cholesterol went from 239 to 180, 25% lower,

My bad cholesterol (LDL) went from 172 to 124, 28% lower.

My good cholesterol (HDL) went from 49 to 44, 10% lower. Ratio = 2.8 to 1

THAT’S MY STORY I AM STICKING TO IT J

George

I have lowered my LDL cholesteral to 70 by taking 40 mg of statin once a day, exercising vigorously for at least one hour most days of the week and by (regretably) giving up tater tot casserole!

Tried Lipitor, caused problems.  Tried diet, couldn't get counts down enough.  Then heard about Zocor or its generic, Simvistatin, and finally got counts down.  Still eat a low-fat diet.  Hillshire Farms has sandwich meats which are 98% fat free, and they taste great!  Veggie Slices and Veggie Shreds make fat-free cheese that tastes almost like the real thing.  Orowheat makes small, wholewheat round sandwich bread which tastes great and doesn't "stuff" you up.  Eggland's Best makes eggs with "good fat" in them.  I also eat avacados and salmon.  I can't live without ice cream and chocolates, so I treat myself to them (and other "bad" foods) once a month or so.  I have switched to dark chocolate, though.

In Response to Re: Fighting cholesteral using fishoil : Just found your post.  My bad cholesteral did go down using the fishoil.  I take two 1200's twice a day.  I shall never be on a statin drug again; it almost did me in.  I hope you're doing well changing your eating habits.

I will never go on statins again either - they put me on 80mg simvastatin and was the worst thing I have every been on.  Bad for my memory, pain and hair loss - I worked on my diet and have taken fish oil for years and went off statins and my cholesterol, hdl, ldl and trigl. all improved and were better without statins.  Doctors still want me on it but are now saying not to use simvastatin and definitely not high doses.  You have to get out there and do your own research to find these things out.  And be careful where you research.  I use Mayo Clinic's research or federal gov.  Don't just listen to anyone as there are quacks out there to.  Good luck and stay away from statins would be my advice -

I have used fish oil for years and I think it helps but have worked on my diet too.  They have changed the numbers so instead of wanting cholesterol less than 200 they want it less than 100!  I think they are gettingover zealous on their numbers - they put me on simvastatin 80 mg and it took a while for me to realize it totally messed me up - confusion, more pain than I normally have (I have chronic pain) so I decided to drop back to 40 mg and didn't tell my doctor and my numbers got better.  And so did my mind - then I finally went off all statins as I had been doing research on statins and found out doctors were no longer using simvastatin (at least at Mayo) as Lipitor was going generic the end of 2011.  So to humor doctors I went on Lipitor 10mg for 3 months but to me not that much of a change so plan on going off all statins.  I don't think it is worth it.  Trying to stick with fish oil and maybe will add niacin too but right now my numbers are great.  I have had 3 stents put in before all this and all the meds have made my hair fall out, added confusion and more pain so I am done with using any meds I don't absolutely need.  Just be careful and you have to be your own advocate and do research as things are changing all the time.  I have heard that if your cholesterol is too low, you can have a heart attack - it is hard to know what to do or whom you can trust.

Statins have terrible side effects.   FDA is now adding diabetes and memory loss to the statin  labels.  I tried eight different statins all gave me terrible aches & pains and horrible leg cramps in muscles and in toes, shins, ankles.   I would recommend going to one of the natural cholesterol drugs (read about them on the net). They cost about $30.00 a month but that is worth it to me for my health.    I had no luck lowering my cholesterol even with large doses of fish oil.  I stay on a low fat diet and I am not over weight, so guess my high cholesterol is genetic.   I will never take statins again - too many awful side effects.
