i have neuropath, rh and degenatrive disk all in my lower back nothing can be done for it but to give me pain pills the rest of my life. i am allerigc to steriods and any kind of therapy could cause a disk to rupture. so i am having a very hard time finding a pain mangement doctor because i am not a money maker because they only make money on steriods and therapy.  also i have congestive heart failure which scares them off.  the DEA is coming down so hard on family doctors for giving out pain pills that i am in a real fix.  some day i will end up in a wheelchair because of my disk and the pain can get unbearable but does the DEA care NO NO NO.  they are so worried about drugs that they don't go after real drug users.  i am on disability 100% because of my back but does that make a difference. nope.  what to do?  i don't know it keeps me so stressed.  anyone out there got any ideas pleaselet me know.

Have you tried "Real Time Pain Relief"??
I have pain from the top of my neck to my finger tips. This stuff works for me.
Rub it on and the pain subsides.
You can email me at   painrelief59@gmail.com. for info.
I like this product. I can get you some to try if you like.

Actually those pain medications are in high demand with all those pain clinics opening up - some legal; some not so much.

I'm wondering what kind of pain medication will work with the CHF - much of it will surpress your heart rate/ breathing rate and that is not good to do with CHF.  You could start to retain fluid.

Ask about acupuncture - doubt your Doc would recommend it ( not a money maker for him) .  I  would consult a doctor at a major medical teaching hospital - they should know the latest and greatest.

I am so sorry to hear about your chronic pain.

If you can find a good hypnotherapist, you can learn ways to ease pain without drugs.

Also, asocietyofsouls.org has a directory of healers who may be able to help you.

Yoga therapy is another possibility. Learning breathing techniques, meditation and even prayer have all been helpful for chronic pain, in my experience.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/radiofrequency-neurotomy/MY00947

I get something called radiofrequency treatments done in a pain clinic at a local hospital.  Read about them in the link above.  You get referred by an orthopeadic surgeon.

For me, they last 4-5 months and take most all of the pain away.  They take a week or two to kick completely in.  AND yes, it hurts, but for me it is worth having 4-5 good months.  My Medicare and Medicaid pay for it completely.

I hope this helps.

Whatever you do don't fall for the homeopathic remedies or other "snake oil" treatments. The way that these psuedo-medications get around the FDA is that there's NO, absolutely NO, active ingreidient. Amazing how many people get away with the homeopathic scam. I too have arthritis and degenerative disk disease in my lower back and in my neck. I have been going to a pain clinic and have tried injections and radio frequency, as well as pain meds and some physical therapy. They also put me on a low dose antidepressant. I have had success with my neck, but so far my dr has tried 3 different treatments for my back, esi, radio frequency and si joint injection (probably some type of steroid). I know what it is like. At work I have to sit for 8 hrs or more a day and sometimes it is excruciating.

I think you should try going to a pain clinic and see what they can do for you. Or try acupuncture. It's worth a try, especially if it helps.

I've been under the care of a Pain Management physian who is a Physiatrist.  When I first found him I had been bed-ridden for over a year.  Within a few weeks of treatment my activity level increased significantly and has steadily gotten better over the five years I've been with him.  My pain is mostly in control and I am clear mentally (MY requirement) even though taking medication.
Many pain patients also suffer from depression and that should also be addressed.
Good luck!

I can empathize with both your pain and financial situation, as I am dealing with the same situation. I have suffered with spondylolisthesis (also a bone deterioration disease). It got to the point that my neurologist said that if I didn't have spinal fusion I would be in a wheel chair within 2 years. With 2 special needs children it was a major decision in my life, but I could barely walk without excusing pain and major pain killers. I never expected that I would be in this situation at any age least my age of 54. They told me I had a 40% chance that I would walk again, but it was either take a chance or definitely be in a chair in 2 years. The only thing I thought about were my kids. I took the gamble and I thank god I can now walk. I still have minor pain because there was 1 nerve too close to my spine that they could not repair. They did correct several discs and 3 nerves. Surgery may not be an option for you but it's something to consider with the amount of pain your in, but you must do your homework with your doctor to help you find the best surgeon that will take the coverage you may have.. Also check with the financial office in the hospital you consider. Most have a fund for people that can't afford the medical expense. They could also give you or may be even help you apply for state funding. As for you medication the neurologist you choose can also help you with that by writing to your I insurance or medicare. Many people do not understand your situation I'm sure, but you need to do what ever it takes to improve your quality of life whether you choose surgery or continued medications. I wish you well and hopethis helped.
Good Luck and God Speed (:
