Where were you when you heard the news about the Sept. 11 attacks? I lived in DC back then and saw the second tower get hit on live TV. Then on my drive to work, I heard news that the Pentagon was struck, too. Scary times indeed. Do you have any special activities or trips to memorial sites planned? The benches and memorial at the Pentagon are very touching and powerful to visit. I have yet to go to Ground Zero in NYC to see the memorial of names and all the new construction. Nor have I been to the site in Shanksville, Pa. Looks like 9/11 has really turned into a Day of Service for volunteering .... and something really positive has emerged from such pain, darkness and loss. God bless the families and friends of the heroic people who lost their lives that day. Here is AARP's 9/11 Observance page: http://www.aarp.org/giving-back/volunteering/911-day-observance/ |

In Response to Remembering Sept. 11: I worked in midtown Manhattan then, but had taken the week off to get my son settled into preschool in our New Jersey hometown. In his class of 10, five parents -- including my husband -- worked in or near the World Trade Center. None were harmed. Turned out many parents had taken the day off or had gone in late. My husband left late for work that day. Since the attacks had occured while he was en route, his subway was diverted away from the Trade Center. Still, upon arriving in the city, he had to run from the smoke cloud. The events of 9/11 made us feel so lucky to have not been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had I been in Manhattan that day, my husband and I would have both been stranded in the city without an easy way to get home to our son. Several residents of my town never made it home. A few days later I learned that a college boyfriend was also killed in the attacks. I can't believe it's been 11 years.
