My children are all grown and on their own. I have a full time job, but am looking for some fulfillment in my life. I'm wondering if anyone knows of an organization or where I can start looking for some volunteer work in the Roslyn, New York area................Gigi |

You can be involved directly with the animals- which is theraputic for the animals AND you. Or you can help in many other ways, fund raising, landscaping, giving tours, spay/neuter and animal care education, computer and office tasks, etc. It's also a good way to meet new people and to find a wonderful new pet for your home. |

Hi Gigi, My name is Janice, and I live in Mississippi. I am just getting connecting with the AARP blog. I've never been to New York, but I know it must be very beautiful there. I hope you have found a volunteer organization to work with. I have worked with several volunteer organizations over the years. I worked with the Salvation Army here in my hometown last Christmas helping with the "Angel Tree." It was so amazing how people granted so many children's wish. It gives me so much joy in helping to meet others need. I have one daughter, and she is my only child. My time with her went by so fast. She been married for 9-years and expecting her first baby (girl). We all are full of excitement. I am looking forward to being a Grandma. I am on Twitter as well. Happy volunteer!!!

In our area we have RSVP for age 55 & over with about 30 places to volunteer. I have chosen a Gateway Thrift store and enjoy it. I joined the Kiwanis club in my town. We do a lot of community work and also work with the Key Clubs and Builder Clubs in the schools. Go to the Kiwanis Website and put in your zipcode to find a club in your area. What usually happens you attend a meeting to see if you would like the club. I am starting my 5th year with them.

I have one in Los Angeles, which would not help you. But check you local University. They are always looking for research participants. We are alwas looking for seniors. |

There are so many opportunities. I have volunteered as a school mentor to a middle school girl. I have also volunteering as a Personal Shopper at DRESS FOR SUCCESS - a wonderful organization that helps at risk women enter or re-enter the workforce by dressing them at the DFS "store". I am retired so its easier for me to get involved. If you're still working I think you could find something on weekends - like the Animal Resuce/Animal adoption (if you are an animal lover) or work with at risk women and children. Maybe your local shelter or women's shelter might need help too. If you are affiliated with a Church, Synagogue or religious organization they too may have outreach. There are always organizations that are in need of folks willing to help. Have a great holiday and all the best for the joyous season. |
