I always thought when I heard this song that the reference to the marching band was the shootings at Kent State by the National Guard. Did anyone else think this?

Hi - Do any of you like this song as much as I do? We're getting ready to post some images that bring you back to the time when you lived through what he's singing about - and so I wanted to start a discussion - what flashes in front of your eyes when you hear this song - for me it's the "three men I admired most" - which I always assumed were the two Kennedy's and Martin Luther King, killed in service to the nation. I love this song also, and have the same feelings about the father, son and holy ghost. It makes you cry and smile all at the same time. Just like those days

That must be a picture of your father on your post because if you are that old you have to know that "American Pie" is the song that summed up the sixties. It is a classic that can not be denied.

The song, imo, is about the loss of innocence. The simpler music of the 50's and early 60's that became a springboard for all the turmoil of the 60's.

Great job. It all seems possible. Although I think that people find meaning in things that was not there to begin with. This could also be true of Shakespeare. This was way fun.

It's featured prominately on my 70's playlist on my iPod. I fondly remember when "American Pie" was declared the song of the year on the AM radio in my parent's car, driving back home from our Christmas Vacation in Florida.
