Pretty good job of reading the song. So far as I can tell, it gets all the main elements, as well as most of the lesser ones, right. One comparatively small point that's not discussed too often: "When the Jester sang for the KIng and Queen . . ."--obviously Dylan and Elvis, but who does anyone think the Queen is? There have been some intriguing suggestions over the years, but it might be interesting just to toss the question out there.

What do I think...............I think I STILL miss the heck out of Janis Joplin. Seeing her picture on here just made me

all over again. I also think American Pie is one of the all time greatest song, as it speaks volumes.

Still one of my favorite songs. There is plenty of meaning to dig through but it all boils down to McLeans belief that when those three greats went down with the plane, the changes they were making in music died. I believe the music lives on in spite of the absence of the greats! The Beatles changed music by believing in their predicessors and what they were trying to do. Jim Croce, Janis Joplin, Led Zepplin, Karen Carpentar,and more live on each making their own changes and marks on the world. It is great to have lived in the 60's and 70's music world, the kids today don't know what they missed!

The song is so poetic, and it has the uncanny ability to tug on an array of emotions. It also has an underlying tensoin of good versus evil, carried out through society by unwitting participants. Great song. A lot of the inn keepers in my circle at http://www.bescover.com are fans, as most innkeepers are from our generation.

Always a fan of Buddy Holly (I was 12 in 1959), I was crushed when I heard he died. The song then, has a resonance with me, particularly "the day the music died." That clearly was the reference to the plane crash. A few years ago, my wife and I made a pilgrimage to Clear Lake, Iowa and visited the Surf Ballroom, kept mostly as it was in 1959. A real shrine.

We also went to the crash site, and were amazed that it is not marked well, and is still just a cornfield. We hiked back along the corn rows to the site to find lots of memorials on the ground and around a makeshift metal memorial. It was almost sacred in its simplicity. Apparently the farmer who owns the land doesn't mind "pilgrims" coming on his land, and to his credit, he is not making money on the visitors. Refreshing.

Finally, long before the Iowa trip, I travelled with a friend to Clovis, New Mexico, who knew Norman Petty, Buddy's "founder" and original manager (his name is still on records as a writer, a clever business decision). Norman showed us the very recording studio where Buddy and the Crickets recorded "Peggy Sue" and many others songs. Again, it seemed a sacred place. There were many small rooms and Norman said that each musician was recorded in a separate room, and the tracks were then layered (multi-tracking, I guess) in the spirit of Les Paul.

Fond memories to this day.

I really detest this song. The radio goes to another channel when it comes on. I can just see Don McLean sitting with paper and pencil in hand saying to himself, "I'm going to throw a lot of words out there and hope people think the song is deep. And I'll make it a pretty long song so I can throw a lot of stuff in." It's just bad poetry with about 100 verses to get into your head.

I am somewhat confused by the dates reported. The song hit number one in 1971 but he never performed it live until late 1972?

I have always liked American Pie, Don McClean was and still is a singer song writer that has vision. "The 3 men I admire most" I always thought he was refering to "Buddy Holly,Richie Valens and the"Big Bopper" even though I have heard that some believed it was JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King. I do feel the song is about all that happened up to the writing of and release of American Pie in 1971, not any of the singers after the song was written! If this was so then McClean would be a fortune teller with which I am not inclined to think he is or ever was.
