Hi - Do any of you like this song as much as I do? We're getting ready to post some images that bring you back to the time when you lived through what he's singing about - and so I wanted to start a discussion - what flashes in front of your eyes when you hear this song - for me it's the "three men I admired most" - which I always assumed were the two Kennedy's and Martin Luther King, killed in service to the nation. What about you? Watch our slideshow about American Pie for inspiration - and then weigh in here.

What about you? Posted by menschmedia I love this song too because if you really listen to the lyrics, you can figure out who he is referring to, the great rock n roll musicians from the 50's - late 70's,80's. I always thought the 3 men were Buddy Holly,Richie Valens and the"Big Bopper' who were all killed in a plane crash. Sue |

In Response to Re: Don McLean's 'American Pie': Lefty, the song was recorded in 1971. How can it be a reference to the late 70's and 80's? I think AARP got it pretty close to right. I've seen so many analogies to this song over the years. I've seen Mr. McLean in concert and although he wont give direct answers, (no writer would) he explained some of it and I'd say it was close. Good job AARP. Thanks for not forgetting the young babyboomers!!!!!!! Posted by thecube44 Sorry,I made a mistake with the reference, knew the the song came out in'71. I was thinking of the musicians who he refered in the song, who were alive then&are still making music today,e.g. "jumpin jack flash' aka"the rolling stones",'jester in the sidelines in a cast aka Bob Dylan. I had a senior moment!!! Sue |
