In Response to Re: Share Your Picks for the Best Movies of 2011: Extremely Loud and Incredibily Awful was nominated as one of the Best Pictures of 2011! You have got to be kidding! If ever the ads and previews for a movie were deceptive, it was this one. Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are in the movie about 20 minutes and we go on and on and on in a search for what a key will open with meaningless results. If we are going to make movies related to the events of 9/11, we certainly deserve something a lot better than this mess. Posted by kika To say a movie abut a boy that comes to terms with the loss of his father on 9/11 is meaningless is totally insensitive. Every ad I saw made it clear Hanks was a victim early in the movie and the fallout from the personal experience of hearing his father's last words was the theme. His search for his father's legacy to him is very meaningful, but you have to stop looking for Hanks and Bullock to understand it. Buy a magazine next time. The young man and his Grandfather were excellent. It is one of the better movies in the past 18 months. |

In Response to Re: Share Your Picks for the Best Movies of 2011: In Response to Re: Share Your Picks for the Best Movies of 2011 : I agree it was a terrible year for movies. The biggest mistake was The Descendent.....what a mess of a movie. To be nominated for an Oscar shows how low the expectations were Posted by whale2 You thought "The Descendants" was a "mess of a movie?" Wow.

In Response to Re: Share Your Picks for the Best Movies of 2011: If one is disappointed in the nominations for the Oscars, one needs to remember the process. It is at its root a process of self-congratulation that the members of the "industry" who decide. In this day of blog after blog where each of us gets to be consumer, advocate, and critic we might more appreciate the (fictitious) "Viewers Choice Awards". Many awards pass over more deserving recipients. That said, for sheer enjoyment I loved "Tin Tin". I don't understand why "Hugo" isn't a blockbuster, but it seems to be struggling to make its production costs back. A big win at the Oscars will likely change that. Of the "serious" movies I saw I thought both "Melancholia" and "The Meaning of Life" were overblown even if the acting ensembles did magnificent work. I thoroughly enjoyed the action movie "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol": it's what movies are about......escapism. "The Artist" was full of fresh talent and wonderful acting......its length could be half as long as it was and still be just as effective as a short. Posted by paulw7 TIME Magazine picked THE ARTIST, but if not that, they, too, said HUGO should get the nod
