In Response to Marilyn Monroe - Has She Really Been Gone 50 Years?: Do you have a favorite performance or memory? Where were you when you heard that she had died? Is there a performer today - probably a young woman - who embodies the qualities that made Marilyn a star? Watch our slideshow here: Posted by menschmedia In the summer of 1955---57 years ago---, Marilyn Monroe attended the Centennial celebration of my mother's tiny hometown of Bement, IL. (See photos here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJIIBkj2vzc ) My mother, Simone, was one of only 22 high school graduates in Bement that spring. Shortly after the Centennial she left her smalltown home to attend the University of IL... and I often wonder how the 18-year old Simone must have felt that summer at an age when she just couldn't wait for her life to begin... The wider world was just about to unfold and how marvelous it must have been to have had Maryiln Monroe help kick open the doors as part of her send off. |

I remember her death occurred close to my 21st birthday. I always thought there was something special about her besides her beauty and obvious sex appeal...she was a lost soul in many ways and only wanted to be loved. Although lots of us loved her in many way, she did not receive the kind of love she needed and craved. I do not think that there is anyone today--albeit there are lots of beautiful young starlets--that could even come close to what Marilyn was. Marilyn Monroe cannot be replaced. We have to just be grateful and appreciate the fact that she passed among us and left her mark. |

She was a great actress/performer & it's too bad she was used & criticized as she was. She may have made some pretty bad decisions in her short life; but, I don't recall anyone giving her the guidance & direction she needed and was asking for in her own way. She has, in many ways, always been imitated, but she will NEVER be dupicated. She was, without any shadow of a doubt, one of a kind. |

In Response to Marilyn Monroe - Has She Really Been Gone 50 Years?: [QUOTE]Do you have a favorite performance or memory? Where were you when you heard that she had died? Is there a performer today - probably a young woman - who embodies the qualities that made Marilyn a star? I was five years old; we were camping in Yosemite National Park, and I remember seeing the newspaper stand with the story of her demise on the front page. I did not know who she was but knew at that moment she was important, and this was a loss, even at the age of five - I knew. Now, as an adult when I watch her movies I am mesmerized. She was so beautiful and had a presence that I do not see with ANY actress before or since. I am an old movie buff, and have followed many of the Old Hollywood movie star careers, such as Marion Davies, but Marilyn transcended all of them with her charisma and beauty. The way she talked, walked, dressed, in pictures - of which she never took a bad photo, all of it. No one can ever replace her, though many have tried to be like her. I guess she had low self esteem though, which is why she went with the wrong guys - that is very sad. I don't blame her for it, her childhood was messed up. And of course, I do believe the Kennedy's and others used her... awful. She is still a star though in my eyes. |
