I agree with your view about (and i also expected that i would get some negative feed back) "Birth of a Nation".However,it is the landmark of American motion pictures(and therefore i had to include it in my list).I agree that two of the movies you picked( "Razor's Edge"&Seven Days in May ") are great movies.

A complete must-see movie in my opinion is White Christmas. It's so typical for that era, boy meets girl, they somehow fight and separate, but always always a happy ending. And who doesn't love a Christmas movie, with glitz and glam. And when you watch this movie, just notice how tiny Vera Ellen's waist is. OMG.

I’m influenced against ‘old’ movies because the acting is sometimes so unnatural, the notion of men being permanently dressed in a suit and tie so old-fashioned (like our primary school readers where Father was always depicted in an armchair,reading the paper, in his suit and tie, smoking a pipe while Mother in bun, heels and pinafore prepares another 4 course meal with a smile) In time, I shall no doubt consider Clint Eastwood wearing a heavy woollen poncho in desert temperatures equally unlikely, or the heroics and acrobatics of Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series far too far-fetched to believe.

I would add two of my favorites to your list: "Das Boot", Wolfgang Petersen's gritty epic of a German Uboat during WWII is so realistic one can almost smell it. And "What Price Glory", a WWI story of a Parisian societe general (Adolph Menjeau) who cares more for his image than the welfare of his troops and takes it personally when they fail to attain an impossible objective and orders one man from each unit to be executed for cowardice. Excellent performance by Kirk Douglas as a lawyer/officer who attempts to defend them and a most poignent rendition of "Dad Treurer Hussar" (the True Soldier)

My husband and I rarely go to movies, but we do love Netflix and will watch a little something from time to time. But, we did go to see Moonrise Kingdom this summer and there's just something about it that makes me want to recommend it to others. If you are or were a fan of the Talking Heads and some off-the-wall movies, I highly recommend David Byrne's True Stories. I will always remember and be available for viewing if someone is showing The Sound of Music. There are others on my must see list, but those are my top three right now.

One of my favorites, "It's a Wonderful Life (1946) is very powerful and inspirational movie. It has a very simple plot. A good person despairs over a failed life. Wishing to end it, he was shown, what life will be if he never existed. He then realized that his community will never be the same without him."

I haven't seen Hope Springs yet but I know Meryl Streep only does good movies. Maybe I'm a kid at heart at 82 but Anna & the King was my very most favorite.

How about Seventh Heaven with Simone Simone and James Stewart on the must see list. A tender love story that stirs hearts, Polyanna makes you GLAD, Frankenstein makes you wonder. If It's Tueday, This Must Be Belguim is a taste of travel with levity, Somewhere In Time gives one a sense of what's meant to be, will be., And Chocolat defines the sweetness of forgiveness, acceptance and love. None of these is earth shaking. All are inspiring.

Just can't beat some of those older classics, like a few of my favorites, "The Thin Grey Line", with Tyrone Powers, or "To Hell and Back", with Audy Murphy, & the likes of, "Sgt. York", with Gary Cooper. Good old movies loaded with traditional integrity & the foundational moral meaning of the American, backbone & spirit that again & again expresses the faith & reasoning behind the drive that moved men like Audy Murphy, & Sgt. York, to fight like they did for God, Country, & Family. These stories tell how we've come as far as we have. Then there are tales of where we are likely to go from where we are now if we stay on the dead-end path that today's leaders seem to be inclined to have us struggle down. Movies like, "The Island", with Scarlet t Johansson, or "Soylent Green" with Charlton Heston, both are a vision of futures that are quite possible if the powers that be are left unchecked for very much longer like they have been for the last 50 years since they removed "The Lord's Prayer', from our public schools. Oh! Someone slap me for almost forgetting the movie that tells us, (though most people are too caught up in their own little worlds to realize it, & altough the original story came out somewhere around 1948, so it's very easily blown off by our stupidity & the lack of God, in our lives) just how close we are to where the powers that be want us, how about George Orwells, "1984". Dare anybody to watch it & not be able to see the parralles in the story line like today's pollitically correct & unpresidented HATE CRIME laws & the storylines reason for Newspeak & THE THOUGHT POLICE, & how many of you will get rid of your LEDHD flat screen TV when you see or read how television is used against us in "1984". Go ahead keep puting people in office that think we are all too stupid to cross a street without them telling us how & then to bend over so as to pay for the instruction.
