This is the story of Jacob Jankowski, who begins to tell the story of his life.  The story begins with a slightly cantankerous Jacob, who doesn't remember if he's 90 or 93, residing at a nursing home.  Then he begins to recall his life, beginning with him at 23, during the Great Depression, a vet student who loses his parents in an accident, and is instantly rendered homeless and without family.  He suffers some sort of anxiety or nervous attack, leaves vet school, and hops on a train and unknowingly ends up starting a very interesting life.

The book weaves back and forth between the life of Jacob, the older guy at the nursing home, and Jacob the young vet student who ends up working as a vet in a circus.  It has drama, intense love, takes us back to the time of the Great Depression, teaches a great deal about the workings of circuses back then, and (here's the best part), it ends well, both, for Jacob the older guy, and for Jacob, the younger man.

I strongly recommend it!

Has anyone else read it?

I have a copy on my night stand and it's the next book I'd like to read. I'm glad you recommend it!
