Has anyone read Steven Pinker's "The Better Angels of Our Nature," which posits an increasingly peaceful civilization?  His tables and statistics are fascinating, especially since, despite the last century's major destructive wars, he claims that it was one of the more peaceful periods of historical development.  Of course, one must accept his definitions of what constitutes "peace' but I found his arguments persuasive.
