It was so generous of my friend to offer her summer place for the weekend, I really needed a break.

I arrived at the cottage mid-day Friday and decided to start my week end off right.  There was a barn dance that night and I am not an especially good at square dancing but with a beer in me I did not hesitate to accept the dance offer from a rather good looking guy.   I left it at one beer as I really did not want a hangover on Saturday but to enjoy the day.

I got up at a descent hour and headed towards the river.  This area is often visited by painters and photographers.  I have seen many pictures of horizons but from here they are just breath taking.   After I gulped up these beautiful views I head towards the wooden bridge.  This is such an old bridge but it is so sturdy.  On the other side of the bridge there is a small village with wonderful arts and crafts shops.

I saw the good looking young man at the café and felt an apology was in order after all I must have broken a toe or two since I stepped on his feet so much!   I felt like such a fool I decided to give him a rather shy smile instead.

I continued enjoying the shops and one pottery shop really was spectacular.  They had these little handmade clay pots on display in such lovely bright colors and some with an iridescent shimmer.  I decided to buy two for my apartment.  When I start feeling stressed out I could look at these pots as a reminder that life is colorful and it is time to relax.

As I started back towards the cabin I thought about the people here and how friendly and happy they are.  It is as though their calmness has a boomerang effect; it goes out and comes back.

Sunday has come and it is time to pack my bag and head back to the city.  Before I leave I will stop by the river café for brunch and some more memories to take back with me.

Regina,
Great story and use of the promp words. I find this to be a lot of fun but have been feeling a little lonely lately being the only one posting. Please add your own set of prompt words when it's convenient. You write well. Welcome.

My Mother’s Not Home Anymore

The rain falls in misty sheets around me as I walk. The humidity of the summer presses against my face, and is sucked into my lungs. Returning home after all these years has proven hard for me. The road to my mother’s old house looms ahead. The past tiptoes ahead of me on little feet tempting me onward. I round the corner and there it is.

The shock of its aloneness startles me for I had thought I was prepared. Memories flood my mind and I can smell fried chicken and corn bread cooking. A white flickering of an old curtain...and I see my mother rushing out the front door wiping her hands on her apron. A small woman not over 5 feet in height and almost as round as she was tall, my mother had the energy of a cannon ball. Always moving forward looking for new challenges and new friendships. She never locked the house; wasn’t afraid. If she had really been there she would have kissed me and told me that dinner was almost ready. Dinner was always close to being ready in her kitchen. A great cook, she loved to feed her family; rich, fried southern food that made you fat but tasted so good.

Pushing in the door I feel her ghost passing me urging me to sit and stay awhile. Most of her furniture has been removed with only an old sofa and a cot remaining. Relatives use the house during hunting season and sleep there. The kitchen looks much the same but no food is ready on the stove. Somehow the house feels strange, too small. There is an eerie innocence to the silence that grows in the rooms. Its as if the house is hugging me; pressing me closer, as if trying to determine if I am someone it once knew.

I enter the bedroom that my sisters and I shared as children. Empty now but so full in the past. In my mind, my bed seems to travel from wall to wall. Once I slept in a double bed beneath the windows and June bugs kept me awake at night hitting the window screen. At another point I slept in a single bed against the wall with no windows, nearer the kitchen. Even further in the past I slept in a baby bed near where the large closet is now. I recall it dimly through thick clouds. So much time has past.  As I exit the bedroom I notice something written on the door frame: XIGT. I giggle. After all these years I remember my secret word. I never told my sisters the meaning and occasionally they still ask. And I still refuse to tell. Secrets of childhood.
Suddenly a bat brushes past my head. The house has issued me a warning, rejecting me. My mother is no longer here and I cannot remain any longer, dreaming of the past. I leave. My Mother is not at home anymore.
