Mockingbird in Holly Tree

Early spring morning
Clarity of sound, color
Bright red berries

Bird in holly tree
A Mockingbird sentinel
Awakened at dawn

Unkind screech of crow
Dark clouds on the horizon
February ends

Solemn reminder
Winter's depth is icy cold
Summer's heat awaits

March threatens early
Heroically pushing in
Awakening life

Enjoy the seasons
Precious yearly sequences

Following in the footsteps of my mother and grandfather before me, I retraced the well-worn path to the old swimmin hole my people have swam  in for 107 years.  My 62 year old legs hesitated,  but remembered and then executed the joyous dance of my, never too distant, six year old self.  An especially fervent babtism  washed over my spirit and my  generously upholstered body as I leaped into the  shimmering, sun warmed waters of the Big Piney river that traverses our family farm.  I swam under the old bridge and made no  apologies for my inelegant intrusion into nature's beauty. The EPA haven't yet shielded Missouri's horizons from  visual spoilage and I am grateful for this. For, if I were a boomerang , I would bounce back to shore and rewind that first great splash over and over until I was as exhausted and happy as I was 56 years ago.

"May my love be left to those behind, " Louisie, Maybe that is all we should leave behind. I like the concept of giving away pieces of ourselves to others so that we will live in their memories. Scarlettd, I like the idea of calling up "your six year old self". We all need to be able to experience life as a child. Fresh and new. I particularly liked the bit about "generously upholstered body" I can relate to that.

I couldn't agree more.  It's always been my philosphy that one should never lose the inner child.  It is that part of us that keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously, too often and allows us to keep living, learning and laughing!  Next time you see a childish grin or sparkling eyes on a mature face, look closer.  You're bound to find a little boy or girl behind it.

My AARP name (Sparkel18) began as an accident. I thought I was entering my password and I usually choose something from my past that I alone know as a "pastword". Sparkel was a little red headed girl that I invented at around age 7. I would make up stories about her before going to sleep at night. I chose her name from the "Fearless Fosdick" comic strips. There was a character named B.O. Plenty who had a daughter named Sparkle Plenty. I'm sure I chose to make her a redhead because my cousin, who was my age, had beautiful red hair. I had curly brown hair. I spelled her name Sparkel (why I do not remember) and she became a superhero to me. There was nothing she could not accomplish if she set her mind to it. Over the years Sparkel has remained with me urging me on. She is my creative spirit; my spunk, my guts.  I decided it was synchronistic that she should be my "call name" on AARP. When I realized that we could upload a picture of ourselves I chose to invent one of Sparkel. I combined two photos; one of me at age 7 and one of my cousin with the red hair. Then I did a little Photoshop magic and "Sparkel18" was born. I am not 7 any longer but 67 but Sparkel is still a valued part of what I am.

WORD LIST FOR 2/29/12

Bitter, island, floating, emptiness, eyelash, coffee, lone, sensitivity, mirror
bonus word: Anonymous

.........................................

Life Is a Series of Adjustments

I sit here drinking in the bitter dregs of what my life has become. Isolation is like a fog that constantly keeps me from thinking clearly about how to proceed. To get on with what I know I have to do. My pleasant porch, my garden...how can I bear to leave them. Living in this house for fifty-two years has become a habit. One I am fearful of breaking. Every morning of these years I have awaken to the view of the oak tree outside my window. I have watched the dawn lighten the sky and heard the birds begin their song. Only one bird at first and then others joining until the morning comes bursting into view and I shake the dreams from my heard. Pulling my body from bed, I force my muscles to awaken as I slowly walk towards the kitchen and the coffee pot. I don't look in the hall mirror anymore. Don't want to see what's there I guess. Some days I completely forget to even run a comb through my wiry gray hair. Sipping my hot, black Community coffee on the back porch is a private pleasure. I love my freedom here on the island. Being in control of my days and hours. My minutes. Time is ticking down and I will soon be forced to make a big adjustment to my life. If only I could stay here anonymously, slowly fading into the bark of the oak tree, being a lone, silent observer of life, sensitive to its seasons. A drop of moisture runs down my cheek and falls into my nearly empty doffee cup. I notice an eyelash floating there. It's very hot this morning, could reach the nineties by noon. I see the figs are ripe and need picking. I'd better get started with my day.
