For great 'short reads'--Mud City, by Deborah Ellis; then her second book, Parvona's Journey; then her third, The Breadwinner.  Another good short read--Kiss the Dust, by Elizabeth Laird.  For longer reads--The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini; The Life of Pi, by Yann Martin.  Right now I'm re-reading Uncle Tom's Cabin on my Kindle.  Love my Kindle Fire!  So many great FREE books to download from Amazon.com     I try and buy used printed books from Amazon.com and have never been disappointed, as their description of the condition is right on target.  Alibris books, (used),  is also great.

For action and adventure, any Clive Cussler about oceanography is exciting.  Hana's Suitcase by Karen Levine is a great account of a Holocoust victim's suitcase being lost.  I love writers from other countries such as Italo Calvino, The Baron in the Trees and The Nonexistent Knight combined with The Cloven Viscount.

Actually, I love a variety of types of books.  The only thing I'm not thrilled to read is modern space-science-fiction.  I have read a few but they didn't hold my attention very much!  My friends/family and I keep books circulating all the time between us!

Ruth Rendell is great.  I'm reading all of hers.  I'd recommend Portobelo to start.  Rave reviews on NYT, Library Journal, Kirkus, etc.  Also Erik Larson's historical fiction - Devil in the White City (Chicago's World Fair), Isaac's Storm (Galveson hurricane).  Frances Maye's Tuscany books.

My latest read was a book about serial killers. If you don't like that...don't read.
Stirred by Crouch & Konrath.

I read these 3 books by Susan Beth Pfeffer and just loved 'em.  They are actually Young Adult; but, ...they were very good.  It started out with Life As We Knew It when the moon got 'pushed' closer to the Earth and what happened around the world.  The 2nd was The Gone and Dead; then, it ended with This World We Live In.  It'd really recommend them.

I've never posted here and am not sure I'll know if anyone replies; but, will attempt to keep checking back.  Such a Newbie...

I've just finished the book, Steve Jobs.  A facinating read..  He was a very complicated man, but a genius in the idea department.  I usually read non fiction.  I love to find out what makes people tick.  To me a real person or story is much more interesting, than reading about something or someone that doesn't really exist.  My next book is the new one out about President Eisenhower.

I agree there is so much more I get out of reading a book - even on a Kindle :)    The Help was a great read and while I enjoyed the movie, the Book was better!

Has anyone ever read The Red Tent - by Anita Diament

Berlin,  1941. A mysterious American delivers to the Abwehr (German Secret Service) a collection of Allied war plans for each following week. The Abwehr is astonished to discover they all turn out correct! Robert Ballard is quickly brought into the fold as he supplies one intelligence coup after another. His only demand—he will not say how the information is obtained.

Ballard shows that German Army codes are being broken one after another by the secret Bletchley Park decoding factory. His urgent warning about the potential trap of Stalingrad just barely prevents the German 6th Army from being annihilated by the Soviets. Ballard is personally decorated by the Führer.

The Gestapo is furious; useful or not, how can anyone be running a masterful spy ring under their very noses?  And they are suspicious of his motives. What is this brash American getting out of this very strange arrangement? Berlin Station Chief Oskar Faulheim means to find out. With the Abwehr shielding Ballard, Faulheim zeroes in on his new girlfriend, the Italian widow, Sabina Pergolesi. But she, too is hiding a secret. Only after Ballard realizes that his idealistic agenda is leading him completely astray can he hope to rescue the woman with whom he has fallen desperately in love.
