Recently finished Judy Collins' latest biography. Took me back to the folk era and really appreciated her honesty about her struggles with alcohol and its place in her family history. A really great and candid portrait of an amazing woman.

In Response to Re: A Great Read:
Has anyone read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon?  Would love to discuss this series.

I read the books through Drums of Autumn, but it was years ago.  I loved the first two especially,  but had tired of the story line after the first four. Have you read the whole series and was Gabaldon able to hold your interest throughout?

These books are the first/only time travel books I have found compelling.

I thought the Swan Thieves was the best book I had read in years. It got me interested in art again and I have been reading art books and watching art DVDs and writing reviews about them since reading it.

The Swan Thieves is about art history and is also about mental illness, love, and female oppression. It's challenging reading.  I read it twice to try to put together some of the loose strings but there will be loose strings in some books. I'm OK with that.

I do remember one of them was a bit slow; but, I did enjoy Breath of Snow and Ashes.  They were 'here, in the US'.  I have not started the last one yet.  I think I will in a few weeks though.
I did find I was getting confused on who was related to who.  I have not purchased the Companion Book - I'll remember what I remember.

My Lord, the OUTLANDER series by Diana Gabaldon is terriffic.  If you had a reading disorder like I do,  and listened  to the series on DVD, you would have the pleasure of having it done with a Scotish accent.  This makes it seem so real and beautiful.  Clair Beaucham-Randall-Fraser is quite a character. so is Jamie Fraser his sister Jenny and Fergus.  I, also, admired Jamie's uncle Colin.  As much as I hated Ms. Duncan (can't remember either of her first names) she was quite surprising and interesting.  I use the PC at the library. Got to go. Carolyn

I read the edited edition in the Reader's Digest book, and had to get the full book. I could not believe it was SO GREAT. It is not something I would have picked out myself. But I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone. I bought several editions to give to friends. Believe it or not, it is called, A DOG'S PURPOSE.
I promise you, you will love it. It was written by a dog as he goes through his many lives, all connected together.
ENJOY!!!!

In Response to Re: A Great Read: My husband read Fall of Giants and its now on my next book list.
He also read Red Mist by Pat Cornwell-which was just ok after that one.

I usually don't go in for the longer novel, but Ken Follett has started a new Trilogy based on the 20th Century. The first book is Fall of Giants. This story commences just as WWI is heating up. Very well plotted and written

My husband also read Fall of Giants and recommended it to me.  Its on my next to read list.  He was not too excited about a book after that one which was Red Mist by Pat Cornwell.  I will be reading Giants next after I finish the one I am reading now.  I have not quite decided whether I am enjoying Man in White sharkskin suit but not at the halfway point yet.

Don't start Emma Donoughue's book, Room, before a big project.  I could not put it down and sat on my couch over a beautiful weekend completely engrossed. It is a story of the young son of a woman who has been abducted.  Scary, full of suspense, sad, stimulating, thoughtful, creative, resilient - are several of the emotions that are key to the book.  I also love the historical fiction (or semi-fiction) that Erik Larsen writes.  Devil in the White City about the Chicago World's Fair (and a serial killer) and Isaac's Storm about the deadliest hurricane in history that hit Galveston, Texas in 1900 are two of my favorites.
