Any book by Martin Cruz-Smith, any book by Tom Robbins, any book by John Case, any book by Nelson DeMille, any book by Lee Child, has been a page-burning good read.

I usually don't go in for the longer novel, but Ken Follett has started a new Trilogy based on the 20th Century. The first book is Fall of Giants. This story commences just as WWI is heating up. Very well plotted and written

The best book I have read recently is an autobiography called Step By Step by Bertie Bowman. He left home at age 13 from a poor black sharecropper family in the deep south, took any job he could in Washington DC and was helped by his Congressman in that endeavor, eventually working his way up to important committee assignments, and became well known to the Washington political establishment including a future President.who wrote an introduction to the book.

Haven't posted here before but the headline grabbed me =)  Trust me; I will be reading all your reccomendations!

As for mine, historical fiction lights my fire.  And so does Amy Tan - I SO would love if she were as prolific as Stephen King!  My favorite by Amy is The Hundred Secret Senses.  I have read it four times now, and will probably hit it again soon.  It warms my heart, makes me giggle, and fills my senses.

Now, on the historical fiction, I am kind of a newbie, but I am loving Conn Iggulden.  Not so much the Roman stuff, but the Genghis Khan books are my favorites, PERIOD.  Best of the best.  Takes me back a thousand years and won't let me go.  Conn is my number one man.

Bernard Cornwell is my other new favorite writer.  LOVE his Saxon Tales.  I Just read the first of his Arthru series and it's intriguing, too.  Right before that, I tapped his Stonehenge and loved it.

Currently delving into my first Robert Low book on Vikings:  The Whale Road.  Little harder to get with its rhythm; not like Iggulden or Cornwell in writing style.  But, I liiiiike it.  Have to look up words more often but I love learning so that's ok.  AND, like Iggulden and Cornwell, his books include maps!  YES!

This guy has his feet on the ground, and claims to have heard words from Mother Earth.  It makes for fascinating reading, and if what (s)he says is true, the big split is right around the corner!

Everyone concerned with building character should read this!

Go to Amazon and search the titleas a Kindle read = only 99 cents!

Just recently retired and am reading like crazy, i love books, i'll read anything except romance and westerns. Stephen King's new 11-22-63 is great, typical King, lots of nostalgia for us baby boomers. Very intriguing. The Millenium Trilogy is awesome. Anything by Paul Austin, Laura Lippman, Dean Koontz, John Irving (A Prayer for Owen Meany)

Thanks for the heads up. I used to read King all the time but his books just became to lengthy for me. Is this one of his real llong ones? Am currently reading The Mask by Koontz. He has become my favorite writer as King was until I felt Koontz beat him out.

I admit I'm a nerd, but still for a fascinating, insightful, & of course, educational adventure - check out For the Love of Physics, by Walter Lewin, a very gifted (now retired) and engaging physics professor at MIT. He explains complex science concepts using everyday examples to illustrate his point. If this seems too heady, check out some of his lectures on YouTube or here:
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/physics/8-01-physics-i-classical-mechanics-fall-1999/
These video lectures were my first introduction to Prof. Lewin. I was hooked from the start, and I couldn't wait to get the book!
As so many others have pointed out, I'll never look at rainbows the same way again.

In the Garden of the Beast and The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet are both great reads. The first, nonfiction,  is about the American ambassor and his family to Hitler and Nazi Germany. What is revealed is amazing, scary and the book is well written. The second one is a wonderful story about a Chinese boy and Japanese girl after the Pearl Habor attack and is told in a series of flash backs. Wonderful books!
