In Response to Re: A Great Read: A Prayer for Owen Meaning is one of my alltime favorites! I then went on to Read many more of John Irving's books and loved this author! Posted by AARPTeri Oh, I loved that book! A Prayer for Owen Meany is enthralling! Let me recommend another psychological, and analytical drama: At Play in the Fields of the Lord, by Peter Matthiessen. He is a naturalist and a great author, so the scenery he includes is so full of accurate description, you think you are there! Anyone here ever read that one? |

In Response to Re: A Great Read: In Response to Re: A Great Read : I've just finished reading it myself. I thoroughly enjoyed it - especially the way he fleshes out the detail in historical events which most of us weren't aware of, in a way that engages us with the moment. It's a good read! Posted by gran2c The Fall of Giants sounds like my kind of book, I will have to get a copy. I am also looking for a good mystery to read, too. Any ideas? |

In Response to A Great Read: I don't usually post on the boards but I read some fantastic books this summer....THE POWER OF NOW & A NEW EARTH; AWAKENING TO YOUR LIFE'S PURPOSE....both by ECKHART TOLLE. The author is absolutely brilliant...I couldn't put them down! They definitely made me aware of how our brains work and how our own thoughts affect our lives.. Posted by ckross I just read the most entertaining book that I received as a gift. It was both heartwarming and hilarious! I found myself laughing out loud many times. It is called "The 5 Greatest Spankings of All Time". It is about growing up in the 1950's on a ranch and the trouble these three brothers got into from time to time. I believe it is available in ebook and soft cover at Amazon. I'd love to know what other's think of this great read? |

Posted by gran2c Ken Follett's books are at the top of my list of favorite authors. The next book in this trilogy Winter of the World is due out September 12th and I'm looking forward to it. If you like historical novels (many taking place during World War II), go to Ken's web site for more titles. I see that there are movie and/or mini-series either available on DVDs or Netflix or soon to be released ; I read Eye of the Needle and see it has been adapted in a movie which I did not realize--it's going to the top of my queue. Any other authors that you recommend? |

I love her standalone books and her Tess Monaghan series. I met her at a book talk in Ft. Worth several years ago. She was charming, witty, friendly and gracious.
