While not a fairy story, my favorite story from my childhood is Scott O'Dell's book "Island of the Blue Dolphins."  Having read the book in the 4th grade, Karana was my first female heroine.  When life today gets too strange & chaotic for me, I think of Karena, her ingenuity to survive  on the Island of the Blue Dolphins alone for 18-years.

I remember enjoying "Heidi" ane the Nancy Drew books but there's one book I read and had to read over and over - at least a dozen times . . . "Gone With the Wind."  I read it for the first time when I was 12 and just loved it (that was 40 years ago) and my mother alsawys said that she shouldn't have given it to me to read 'cause one of my favorite sayings is "I'll think about it tomorrow.  After all, tomorrow is another day."

Ooh...Heidi. I loved that book as a child. I haven't thought about it in years. It left such a strong impression on my mind that for years I would pretend that I was sleeping in a loft and listening to the wind blowing through the cedars. And I can just see the grouchy old grandfather and the goats. I liked Gone With the Wind also. My favorite line from the book was Rhett's "Frankly my dear, I don't give a dam!

In Response to Re: What was your favorite fairy story or children's story as a child and how can you relate it to your life today.:
I was raised in a community without a library.  Our school library was so small it filled a wall that was about 20 feet wide.  I learned to appreciate the value of a book early on and every christmas or birthday had a book wrapped for me.  I remember reading books my mother lover.  Freckles and the Ann of Green Gables.  The Hardy Boys, Bobsey Twins and Ann Drew followed.

The wonder of books carried me to places I would not get to visit until I retired.  If there is a better gift, I cannot imagine what it would be.

I was raised in a community without a library.  A book was the gift that I always craved and loved.  My first memories were of receiveing Ann of Green Gables and Freckles.  I loved a book more than candy.  Most book I read became a reason for visiting a place.  Many of those places were not visited until we retired.  It is remarkable that I carried those memories for all those years.

I loved the Bobsey Twins as a young girl. I was an avid reader and the tails of those two girls took me out of my somewhat humdrum life and transported me to exciting adventures. No matter where I was I could escape into my world of books.

I read the Bobbsey Twins also. As I recall one set of twins was Nan and Bert. Wasn't there a second set? I could relate to the twin situation as I have sisters who are twins. I spent many hours engrossed in the adventures of the Bobbsey Twins. Books are still a great way to escape.
