EVENT: Future of the Internet, 11/10/2005

woman using wireless laptop In 2011, the first Baby Boomer will turn 65. As a generation, they will be getting ready to deal with the challenges ahead and they will be looking online for information and products related to health and wellness, financial security, caregiving, and independent living.

The Boomers are much more "wired" than the generation before, with nearly 60 million of them currently online, and more likely to follow. At the same time, innovations in technology, such as broadband and wireless, are changing what it means to be "online" for everyone.

Pew Internet and American Life Project

In 2004, the Pew Internet & American Life Project conducted a broad-ranging survey of technology leaders who predicted that by 2014 the Internet will be more deeply integrated in our physical environments and high-speed connections will proliferate – with mixed results. In addition to these forward-looking findings, Susannah will share the latest survey data on the current Internet population, including household broadband penetration and updates on online activities such as health searches and news consumption.

How will government websites evolve to meet citizens' growing demands for fast, efficient, and personalized government information and services? Bev will share some of the best new ideas for managing government websites, and how government web managers are coming together to reduce duplication, share best practices, develop new services for citizens, and prepare for the future.

In order to anticipate the opportunities and challenges of the increase in older adults online, AARP recently held a series of scenario planning workshops to explore what life might be like in 2011 from an older adult / Internet perspective. Participants in the workshop included thought leaders from academia, business, and government, as well as futurists, such as science fiction writer Bruce Sterling. Mike will discuss the preiminary findings of this effort.
