Abstract

Classes offered to the community by Inova HealthSource are provided to Inova employees at a 75 percent discount, and, in some cases, free. Many of these classes focus on topics of importance to new grandparents and families, as well as work-life issues.

Practice Specifics

  • Recruiting: Inova recruiting sources include military events (targeting those retiring from the military) and Senior Job Boards. Inova created an enhanced employee referral program called "Hot Jobs." Inova enhanced its existing referral program to offer higher bonus payouts for positions deemed by management to be traditionally hard to fill. The award for a successful full-time hire was $2,000 and part-time hire was $1,000 for positions designated as "Hot Jobs."
  • Workplace Culture/Continued Opportunities: The Inova Learning Network created a training program that included workshops on communication skills, stress reduction, change management and staff coaching. Survey results suggest that this training program has contributed to lower employee turnover rates and increased employee satisfaction. In 2003, Inova awarded more than $2 million in tuition assistance to employees. Plus, it has a certification bonus and a scholarship program to help employees advance their careers. Based on an employee survey, Inova introduced a new short-term disability program that pays up to 50 percent salary reimbursement at no cost to employees with more than one year of service to Inova. Inova hosted a Multi-Generational Fair to get information to employees who balance careers and responsibilities for children, spouses and/or aging parents. Retention strategy includes shorter nursing shifts and placement in eICU (supplementary off-site monitoring of ICU patients), allowing nurses to continue providing bedside patient care with reduced physical demands.
  • Benefits/Health: Inova offers health, prescription, vision, dental, long-term care, and disability insurance to all employees. Full-time employees pay ten percent of the premium for individual coverage and 22% of the premium for family coverage. Part-time employees (defined as at least 16 hours per week for disability and long-term care insurance and at least 20 hours per week for all other insurance) pay 30% of the premium for individual coverage and 32% of the premium for family coverage. Employees do not pay for disability. Employee share of premium declined between 2004 and 2005. Also, by completing a Health Risk Assessment, employees can receive tailored health reports and a Personalized Action Plan.
  • Benefits/Financial: All employees are automatically enrolled in Inova's cash balance pension plan, 100 percent of which is paid for by the organization. Inova offers a 401(k) or 403(b) plan to full-time and part-time employees. After one year of service, Inova offers a match of $1 for each $1 contributed on the first 2 percent of eligible compensation and $0.50 for each $1 contributed on the next 2 percent of eligible compensation, for a total match of 3 percent on the first 4 percent of compensation. The 401(k) plan has recently been amended to allow for enrollment for employee deferrals on the date of hire. In addition, they offer employees three different college savings plans with application fee discounts, good for children or grandchildren.
  • Benefits/Flexible Scheduling: Inova offers full-time, part-time, PRN (as needed), status D and every-other-weekend options. They offer 36 different scheduling options that employees can customize to meet their needs, including phased-in retirement. Inova lets employees accrue time to use for extended illness, injury or for the birth of a child, called the Extended Illness Bank (EIB). They allow employees with ill children to use their own EIB time to care for the child. They do not limit the number of EIB days that can be used to care for ill children. Nor do they require doctor's notes from employees who wish to access their EIB banks.
  • Retirees: Retirees are defined as age 55 with five years of service. Inova provides retirees with ongoing access to retirement planning workshops or retirement planning information. Inova pays the first year membership to AARP so that employees may take advantage of the health plan. Inova offers temporary work assignments, consulting work, part-time or full-time jobs to its retirees. Rehired retirees are eligible for the same level of benefits that they would receive if they were fully retired.
  • Age of Workforce: 28% of employees are 50+. 10% of new hires are 50+.
