On Nov. 17, AARP Arizona and the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) hosted a business luncheon at Scottsdale Community College entitled "Managing Your Business in Light of the Demographic Imperative". The luncheon was the first joint effort by AARP Arizona and MCCCD to educate local businesses on the issues affecting today's companies and the older workforce.

"This luncheon provided a great venue for discussion on how the reality of the aging workforce affects a company's bottom line," said AARP Arizona State Director David Mitchell. "We also shared important information about trends in the workplace with leaders of small and large business."

AARP research has shown that by 2012, nearly one in five workers will be at least 55 years old.

"We realize that many employers have not yet identified what the graying of the workforce will mean to them, and what they should do to meet their workforce needs in the coming years," said Mitchell. "As part of AARP's collaboration with the Maricopa Community Colleges, we wanted to start bringing this issue forward so that businesses can better prepare in order to remain competitive."

In 2001, to raise business awareness of the issue, AARP established an annual award program called Best Employers for Workers Over 50.

"This year, Scottsdale Healthcare was recognized as an AARP Best Employer for Workers Over 50," said Mitchell. "We were delighted that a representative from Scottsdale Healthcare was at our event to talk about their efforts to address mature worker issues."
