Volunteer for the Nation’s Largest Free Tax Preparation and Assistance Service

Are you interested in a rewarding volunteer opportunity? Can you communicate clearly? Do you enjoy helping those in need?

Did you know that AARP Tax-Aide assisted over 57,000 New Jersey residents with free tax preparation last year? The program offers free tax preparation at 200 local sites, generally at libraries and senior centers, from February through April each year.

Volunteers are needed in your community to assist with income tax preparation and other administrative duties. The ideal volunteer for tax preparation is computer literate, well organized and enjoys interacting with others. All volunteers receive training from the AARP Tax-Aide program which is administered through AARP Foundation , in conjunction with the IRS. Training takes place in December and January and our tax season runs from February 1st though April 15th. (Some areas also offer a tax software familiarization program during October or November).

“This is one of the most interesting volunteer opportunities I’ve ever had. I know that I am helping others and really making a difference” commented a volunteer after last year’s tax season. This highly rewarding volunteer activity also offers you an opportunity to learn a new skill. You will be trained and certified by the IRS to electronically prepare and file Federal Income Tax returns. You will also be trained in preparing NJ Income Tax returns and the various NJ Property Tax Rebate programs (e.g. Homestead Rebate and PTR/Senior Freeze).

If you are not comfortable with computers or do not want to prepare tax returns, there are other satisfying opportunities available including Client Facilitators, Technology, Communications, and Site Coordinators. There is something for everyone.
