If you are contacted by an heir finder, or if you are interested in conducting your own search, heed the following:

  • Search for property yourself by contacting your state's division of unclaimed property or by visiting its website.
  • If you are due an inheritance, you may collect it directly from the state's unclaimed property division.
  • Gather sufficient information to verify the claim and authenticity of the heir finder if one contacts you.
  • Never pay an heir finder in advance. Most reputable finders receive their share when the estate is settled.
