This year, AARP Tax-Aide, the nation's largest, free volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service is seeking volunteers in New York State to assist in tax preparation and to become leadership coordinators. Each year from Feb. 1 through April 15, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers prepare federal, state and local tax returns for low- and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older.
Volunteers are especially needed to assist with electronic filing of tax returns. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. You don't need to be an AARP member or be a retiree to volunteer. Tax counselors receive free tax training and become IRS certified by passing the IRS exam. They help customers one-on-one at tax sites and/or volunteer as Internet tax counselors.
Last year in New York, over 1,600 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 83,000 taxpayers at over 500 sites across the state.
"The AARP Tax-Aide program is a wonderful resource for the American taxpayer," said Dorothy Ryan, AARP Volunteer. "AARP Tax-Aide volunteers get a great deal of satisfaction from helping people deal with the challenges of preparing their tax forms. It's a great way to learn new skills and to be involved in your community."
