More than 40 million individuals - about two out of every five American households - own shares in at least one mutual fund.
Mutual funds are a relatively safe investment, and they often require only a small investment. Be aware, however, that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) does not insure your mutual fund investment. This means that you could lose all or part of the money you invest in a fund.
