Retirement isn't a time to be idle. Instead, it's a time to make important choices about how you want to live the rest of your life. It could be a time to:

  • Start a new career.
  • Establish a small business.
  • Scale back to a part-time job.
  • Devote yourself to volunteer activities.
  • Spend more time with family.
  • Travel to new places.
  • Pursue interests that you've stored on your "back burner" for years.

Start early to save and plan for retirement. That way, you'll have the financial freedom to make meaningful choices in your retirement years. These choices will affect you and your family. Now is the time to visualize your retirement. Now is the time to make sure your retirement dreams come true.

Make sure you read and complete the worksheets in AARP's Creating a Financial Plan Web feature. Creating a financial plan will help you begin your retirement planning. Once you've done this, you'll be ready to take a closer look at all your sources of retirement income. It's critical that you learn about - and take advantage of - all these sources of income. Only then can you create a secure retirement for yourself.
