If getting more exercise is among your New Year’s resolutions, consider this: You’re likely to save more by paying each time you go to your gym or health club than by paying for a monthly or annual membership.
A workout costs on average $10, a savings typically of $700 a year compared with paid memberships, which average $17 a visit, says economist Stefano DellaVigna of the University of California at Berkeley. That’s because people don’t work out as often as they think they will. "The monthly membership is better if you attend at least twice a week," DellaVigna says. "But most people wind up going only once a week."
