Today we are going to talk about one of the hottest new gadgets. It also happens to be one of the most useful computer tools ever created.
This device goes by many names. Some call it a USB hard drive. It is also called a flash drive, a portable hard drive, and pocket hard drive. But whatever you call it, it is an amazing little gadget.
Just remove the cover to expose the USB connector. Then plug the hard drive directly into the USB port on the computer. All of the computers made in the last 3 or 4 years have USB ports. Many newer computers have the USB ports in the front of the computer making it easier to use a USB drive.
Windows 98 requires the installation of drivers, but newer operating systems including Windows Me, Windows XP, and Mac OSX will recognize the drive as soon as it is plugged into the computer. After you plug in the USB drive, you will see the drive appear as a new icon when you click on My Computer. To copy or move files, you simply drag them from your desktop to the hard drive or vise versa.
These portable drives come in many different shapes and sizes. Many come with straps so that you can wear them around your neck. Some can be attached to your key chain. Some have dual personalities… like this USB drive that is also a fully functioning writing device.
USB drives are great for transferring files between work or school and home. You can use them for a quick backup for important files. They are also great for transferring photos and are indispensable if you travel and want to take your important files with you.
