Netscape Percentages Dwindle
By Sandy Berger
If you use Netscape as your Internet browser, you can now join Apple users as a slim minority. As of August 2002, WebSide Story, Inc, a leader in Web analysis, reported that Netscapes’s global usage share had dropped to 3.4 percent. This is an almost 10 percent loss from the same time last year when Netscape aficionados were 13 percent of the total browser users.
While many Apple enthusiasts are vocal, diehard users, Netscape does not seem to be able to conjure up much user passion. In early 1999, Netscape’s market share was about 32 percent. Since then users have jumped ship in record numbers. Most are boarding Microsoft Internet Explorer. Any hope that AOL will bail Netscape out of its woes has been abandoned and Netscape may soon be battling Opera for the last 1 or 2 percent of the market.
While Netscape shows a higher than average user base in Switzerland, Germany, Canada, and the United States this is still not enough to bolster their declining numbers.
