Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is the term for bringing the latest advances in technology to transportation. ITS technologies are already evident in real-time electronic highway messages, traffic information hotlines, electronic toll collection, larger lettering on signage, flashing strobe stoplights and countdown mechanisms at pedestrian crosswalks.

Technology already exists to wire roadways and vehicles to warn drivers approaching an intersection of a potential crash, says Steve Kuciemba, spokesman for the Intelligent Transportation Society of America.

An in-vehicle warning light or a large signal light hanging next to a stoplight could alert drivers to slow down and avoid a crash.

While waiting for the day when smart cars and roads make driving safer, car owners can improve current vehicles with simple, affordable devices. A driver rehabilitation specialist or occupational therapist can advise and train drivers to use pedal extenders, panoramic rearview mirrors, turn signal amplifiers and other modifications. Go to the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists' website to search for a specialist near you.
