A portable hard drive that is easy to operate, needs no external power, and is so small it can be carried on a keychain…now that's a winner. This device should be in the running for the usability award of the year.
The Fujifilm USB drive is a diminutive 4" by 1". Weighing in at a mere 0.7 ounce, it plugs directly into any computer's USB port. The built-in processor works without drivers for Windows XP, Me, 2000, Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. Windows users; simply insert the drive into the port, click on My Computer, and see the contents of the USB drive. Mac users will see the USB drive on their desktop for immediate availability. Computer users who use older operating systems can utilize the drive with the simple installation of a small software driver. Since the drive is powered by the USB port, there is no need for a battery or AC adapter. It passed my usability tests with flying colors as I both purposely and accidentally banged, dropped, and hit it.
Simple in design, the USB drive has an interlocking cover for protecting the USB connector. The cover is designed so that the drive can be securely used on any chain, including a key chain. It can also be clipped to a belt or pocket. The FujiFilm drive is available in sizes ranging from 32MB to 512MB version. The 32MB drive costs $50; the 64MB unit, $70; and the 128MB drive, $150.
This device has a myriad of different uses. It can be used easily to transport files between work or school and home, desktop and laptop, or even used as a type of sneaker-net between two or more computers. When you visit friends or relatives and they show you their great digital photos, you can now take copies of the photos home with you by simply reaching in your pocket and pulling out your USB drive. This is also a great way to transfer files between a PC and a Mac.
Out of all the computer equipment I review regularly, this has gotten the most use. It's small. It's portable, and it works!
