Five Ways to Cook Your Spam

1. Don't open spam—just delete it. Opening it just confirms there is a working address.

2. Keep your primary e-mail address private. Give it only to those you trust.

3. Have an alternate e-mail address. If you buy products online, register for free offers or sign up for e-mail newsletters, set up a second address for free by contacting your Internet service provider or going to a site like www.yahoo.com.

4. Always check the privacy policy of websites you visit. Opt out of receiving mail from their partners.

5. Devise an e-mail address with numbers as well as letters. A complicated address is harder for spammers to find.
