France: Face-to-Face Interaction Just a Phone Call Away
Surveys show the vast majority of people want to remain in their homes as they age. But for many this may come at a sacrifice - distance from loved ones and caregivers which can lead to isolation and loneliness. Studies show many older people can go an entire month without seeing anyone they know. Thankfully, a French company has designed a solution to increase ‘face-to-face’ interaction with loved ones and caregivers from the comfort of their own homes.
France Télécom has released MaLigne Visio, a videophone system that uses ordinary telephone lines to bring callers face-to-face. The videophone can make calls to ordinary landline and cellular phones, as well as operate in a “secret video” mode without the image. There is also a feature that allows users to connect digital cameras and camcorders to view photos or video clips simultaneously, all the while continuing the conversation.
Another innovative feature is the product’s ability to join with a service to connect seniors with doctors and other members of medical services. The video capability allows personable interaction in instances where physical visits are not necessary. Moreover, the videophone enhances the experience of aging in place, as its users can stay in close contact with their loved ones without losing the ability to see them.
Those on the other end of the line must have the videophone to fully appreciate this technology. However, the system also allows video telephony via Wanadoo Visio, a free software that connects users over the internet.
The system is currently available to approximately 75 percent of the population in France. It is easy to install and simple to use, while the rewards to reap are quite remarkable for older persons wishing to remain in their own homes as they age.
