UNM Hospitals offer training courses specifically targeting the over 50 age group such as ‘Generational Issues in the Workplace,’ ‘Diversity,’ as well as the ‘Mentoring Program.’ In addition, clinical and professional staff receive 40 hours per year of paid time to pursue CEU and professional continuing education credit.

  • Workplace Culture/Continued Opportunities: UNM Hospitals offer the following learning and development programs to its full and part-time employees (working at least 20 hrs/week); tuition reimbursement (20% used past 12 months), in-house classroom training (80% used past 12 months), on-line training (100% used past 12 months), and certification classes (20% used past 12 months). Long-service anniversaries are celebrated with announcements, parties, and awards.
  • Benefits/Health: Full and part-time employees (working at least 20 hrs/week) receive individual and family medical coverage, individual and family prescription drug coverage, individual and family vision insurance, individual and family dental insurance, as well as long-term disability. 63% of employees are enrolled in the individual medical and prescription drug plan while 19% are enrolled in the employee and family medical and prescription drug plan. 48% of employees are enrolled in the individual vision plan, 17% in the employee and family vision plan, 55% in the individual dental plan, 32% in the employee and family dental plan, and 80% in the long-term disability plan. Health benefits for retirees pre-65 and 65+ include individual and spouse medical and prescription drug coverage, as well as individual and spouse vision and dental insurance. All of the above benefits are available to new hires upon retirement. The hospital offers a health flexible spending account.
  • Benefits/Financial: The hospital offers a 401(k) retirement savings plan to its full and part-time employees. Employees age 50+ can make ‘catch-up’ contributions to their 401(k) account and also invest in lifecycle funds. In addition, employees are offered the opportunity to participate in a 457(b) plan. The hospital contributes (not match) 5.5% of base pay and the employees are vested in 5 years. Management staff receive a 7.5% contribution to the 401(k). The hospital offers referral services to assist with child care and elder care. The following wellness programs are offered to full and part-time employees; flu shots, smoking cessation programs, health club discounts, recreation/leisure activities, and stress management training. 77% of employees have utilized at least one of the above wellness benefits in the past 12 months.
  • Benefits/Alternative Work Arrangements: The hospital offers the following alternative work arrangements to its full and part-time employees: compressed work schedules (33% participation), job sharing (0.5% participation), and telecommuting (2% participation). Full-time employees are eligible to move to part-time work on a permanent and temporary basis.
  • Opportunities for Retirees: The hospital currently has 54 retirees. The hospital stays connected with its retirees by inviting retirees to organization events or celebrations and formally acknowledging employees on the occasion of their retirement. Retirees are offered the following work arrangements: temporary work assignments, telecommuting, part-time and full-time work, as well as other opportunities offered to current employees.
  • Age of Workforce: Twenty-nine percent of the hospital’s employees are 50+. Fourteen percent of the hospital’s past twelve month new hires are 50+. The average tenure of employees age 50+ is 8.85 years.
