Department stores and smaller retail outlets are obvious places to try, but don't overlook shipping companies, restaurants, movie theaters, craft shops and toy stores.

Pay typically ranges from $9 to $12 an hour. The hours may include weekends, evenings and even the holidays themselves.

You may get a nice perk: an employee's discount that will save you money on your own holiday purchases.

Get started now. It's best to apply online, then follow up in person, appropriately dressed, with a smile on your face and a résumé in your hand, says Snagajob spokesperson Amanda Richardson. Work hard and treat the job as a tryout — it could lead to a full-time position.
