AARP's community service programs offer a variety of volunteer opportunities related to program management, administration and operations. Over 42,000 AARP program volunteers bring a variety of skills and experience to their positions in service to their communities.

AARP Community Service Programs

AARP Tax-Aide
AARP Tax-Aide now helps nearly 1.8 million low- and middle-income individuals, with special attention to those 60 and older, with tax preparation. This program is administered through the AARP Foundation at 8,600 sites. Many of these sites now e-file. Learn about volunteer opportunities in your area or ask your tax questions online. A listing of Tax-Aide sites in your area is available during the February 1 through April 15 tax season.

AARP Driver Safety Program
The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest classroom driver refresher course specially designed for drivers age 50 and older. The program's 10,000 volunteers are the reason for its impressive success. Learn about volunteer opportunities in your area or find the location of a class nearest you.

Find A Chapter Near You
AARP chapters offer a face-and heart-for the Association locally. As a strategic link between members, communities and AARP programs and services, chapters bring members a variety of community service, education, leadership and fellowship opportunities. Chapter community service activities range from participation in national AARP programs to local mentoring and tutoring projects, food and clothing drives, friendly visits and much more. AARP chapters are well positioned to provide direct support for AARP State Office goals and also combine forces with groups like Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House and Meals on Wheels to make life better in communities where members live and work. There are 2,900 AARP Chapters across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

NRTA: AARP's Educator Community
Working with local retired educators' associations, NRTA's "With Our Youth!" program helps adults respond to the needs of school children and the broader community. Through this arrangement, experienced educators take on a variety of volunteer assignments such as helping high school students prepare for writing exams, providing school supplies and books, and gathering canned goods, clothing and toys for the holidays.

AARP Money Management
Help low-income or disabled individuals manage and keep track of their financial matters. Volunteers help people organize and keep track of financial papers, establish a budget, write checks and balance their checkbooks. You may also serve as a representative payee, with greater responsibility. The program works with state and local community service agencies to help people maintain their financial independence, remain in their homes and provide an added level of protection against financial exploitation. CyberSeniors/CyberTeens Computer Program
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Learning Computers Together Partnering with Mississippi Retired Teacher's Association (MRTA), AARP Mississippi presents the CyberSeniors/CyberTeens Computer Training Program. In this unique intergenerational partnership, teens and adults teach seniors basic computer skills. The program consists of a series of workshops starting with basic computer skills up to a more advanced level, Internet and email, basic windows and basic word processing. Each class consist of eight one-hour sessions held over the course of eight weeks.

Obesity/Fitness Program
AARP Mississippi is working to establish a statewide partnership with the Cooperative Extension Programs to offer a comprehensive Obesity/Fitness Program. The program is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals to participate in a series of workshops to educate and increase awareness about managing chronic illnesses with proper nutrition and physical activity, and change personal lifestyle behaviors.

Friendly Visitor
AARP continues to recruit individuals to serve as Friendly Visitors to Nursing Home Residents. This program is an extension of our Nursing Home Quality Care Initiative. The Friendly Visitors are trained to report anything they see, hear, or smell that may be of concern.
