AARP Massachusetts recently joined with Mass Home Care and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs to honor the Bay State's more than 1200 Money Management volunteers. During a ceremony at the State House in Boston, state legislators, program managers, volunteers and clients heralded Money Management for the invaluable services it affords older persons statewide, and also for the intangible rewards it provides for volunteers.

Helping Thousands in Massachusetts

AARP developed the first Money Management program twenty-six years ago. Today, AARP cosponsors the program across the country in twenty-four states, including Massachusetts where AARP works with the Executive Office of Elder Affairs and Mass Home Care. The Massachusetts program is the largest of its kind, having served over 6800 clients since 1991.

The goal of the Money Management program is to help individuals who are at risk of losing their independence due to inability to manage their financial affairs.

Opportunities to Help

The Money Management Program, administered by the AARP Foundation, has three types of opportunities for volunteers to help:

  • Provide information on money management help educate individuals and their caregivers.
  • Serve as a Bill Payer to provide check book balancing and bill paying services to individual clients.
  • Serve as a Representative Payee, who is appointed by a government agency to receive and manage a government benefit (such as a Social Security check) when a client has been determined to be incapable of handling his or her funds.
