Volunteers have played an integral role throughout AARP since the Association's inception. We know that it is important that the volunteer opportunities we offer in the state of Delaware not only continue to support AARP's mission and strategic imperatives — but also provide meaningful, fulfilling opportunities to those who serve in our volunteer roles. But, the scope is even larger. Through your volunteer involvement in our advocacy, community service and communication efforts, you can help support AARP's vision to become a vital presence in every community in the First State.

Advocacy Volunteers

Whether you're interested in becoming involved behind-the-scenes or in legislative hall, AARP Delaware's Advocacy Volunteers play a number of important roles to support AARP 139,000 members' interests in the state and national legislative halls. We are currently looking for members willing to serve as Advocacy Issue Leads, Representative Captains and "Red Hat Brigade".

  • Advocacy Issue Leaders
Advocacy Issue Leaders are AARP's volunteer lobbyists and serve as the volunteer leaders for various legislative issues important to AARP. As an Advocacy Issue Leader, you'll learn AARP's legislative issues in detail, and represent AARP's position in front of elected officials. Estimated time commitment is four hours per week, January through June. Weekly travel to Legislative Hall in Dover is required; travel expenses will be reimbursed.
  • Representative District Captains
Representative District Captains (RDC) assist in coordinating grassroots actions of a small group of AARP volunteers, including informing volunteers of AARP legislative activity and answering questions related to a requested action. Estimated time commitment is two hours per week. Most communication will occur via telephone. No travel is required.
  • "Red Hat Brigade" Volunteers
Our "Red Hat Brigade" Volunteers provide support and assistance to AARP Delaware's legislative activities on an "as needed" basis. Members of this team volunteer by making telephone calls, writing letters and making public appearances in the state's legislative halls to serve as the "voice" and provide visibility for AARP when needed. Initial communication occurs via telephone and e-mail.

Community Service Volunteers

As a Community Service Volunteer, your involvement and your commitment to helping others by addressing daily life concerns of seniors bring AARP to an individual problem-solving level. We have opportunities available for Community Service Specialists to recruit and support members volunteering for AARP Delaware Community Service events and activities. As a Specialist, you will be responsible for the coordination of efforts within your assigned county.

Communications Volunteers

Our Communications Volunteers' efforts will be two-fold — to provide support to all AARP Delaware advocacy and community service endeavors and helps build AARP Delaware as a resource for information on aging issues. We are currently seeking a Communications Lead Volunteer to assist in facilitating communication and information between the state office, volunteers and the media throughout the state.

For more information about any AARP Delaware volunteer opportunities, please submit a volunteer interest form indicating your area of interest. A member of the AARP Delaware team will contact you to discuss your volunteer interest in more detail.
