Voice Your Opinion on Property Tax Reform
Gov. Mitch Daniels' property tax reform plan is sparking statewide reactions from legislators, local officials and affected interest groups, including homeowners. To help you decide, AARP Indiana has posted the governor's speech on our Web site.
Additional, supporting documentation is available on the governor's Web site. A respected, independent source of property tax information is available at http://www.agecon.purdue.edu/crd/localgov. The author is Larry DeBoer, a Purdue University economist.
AARP Indiana seeks your opinions on the governor's plan and possible alternatives. Let us know what you think. Send an e-mail to mdeagostino@aarp.org, or phone Martin DeAgostino at (866) 448-3618 toll free.
Don't Let the Walls Foreclose In On You
Chances are someone you know is struggling to make a house payment. After all, more than 34,000 foreclosure notices have been filed in Indiana this year alone, and Indiana's mortgage foreclosure rate has outpaced the national average since 1999.
If you or someone you know is behind on the mortgage, or remotely in danger of falling behind, please contact the Indiana Foreclosure Prevention Network.
The sooner you act, the better chance you have of saving your home.
AARP Indiana is proud to promote the network, which we supported as part of House Enrolled Act 1753 during the 2007 state legislative session. The new law authorized the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to establish a statewide program to provide free mortgage foreclosure counseling and education to at-risk homeowners.
The Network has a toll-free hot line that's open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. And it has a 24/7 Web site with useful information that can help you keep your home.
The phone number is 877-GET HOPE. The Web site is www.877gethope.org.
All services are free.
If you call, certified housing counselors will help you over the phone. If more help is needed, the counselor will refer you to a foreclosure intervention specialist in your area. All counselors and specialists in the Indiana Foreclosure Prevention Network are certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD.
The Web site includes an educational slideshow about the foreclosure process and ways you can prevent it - even if you're behind or about to fall behind on your payments.
You can also submit information about your specific situation, so that counselors can make appropriate referrals. All information is confidential and secure; you don't have to worry about privacy.
Now that the network's in place, AARP Indiana encourages our members, their families and friends to make the most of it. We're also supporting stronger protections for homebuyers in testimony and action before the Indiana General Assembly.
You can help by telling us your story. Contact Martin DeAgostino at mdeagostino@aarp.org, or call him at (866) 448-3618 toll free.
