Through sheer numbers, you can help turn up the volume on AARP's voice at the state capitol. Hop on a bus in Rapid City, Wall, or Philip on the 22nd. A bus will leave from Aberdeen, Redfield, and Huron on Jan. 23.
On Jan. 24, a bus will pick up members in Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Vermillion and Yankton. Once in Pierre, sit down to lunch with legislators from your district to discuss the issues important to you and your fellow AARP members. When AARP members talk, lawmakers listen.
By participating in Lobby Days, you'll also get a chance to watch the state House and Senate in session, and be recognized by the legislature, before the buses head for home.
Recalling Lobby Days 2006, Yankton Chapter President LeRoy Bring says, "People really enjoyed it. A majority of the people had never been to the capitol."
Bring feels it is important for lawmakers to sit down with small groups of voters to hear their concerns.
In 2006, nearly 170 members attended AARP South Dakota Lobby Days in Pierre. Each received a red fleece vest, making AARP members easy to spot, and hard to ignore. More than 30 state legislators and statewide elected officials accepted the invitation to lunch and conversation with members, making the event a huge success.
"We are pleased so many legislators realized the importance and value of meeting with our volunteers who made the trip to Pierre to be a voice for AARP members in South Dakota," says State Director Sarah Jennings. "We hope in 2007 AARP can have an even bigger presence in Pierre."
Attendance is free, but your participation is invaluable to AARP South Dakota and our advocacy efforts in the state legislature. So save the date!
